The cat-o'-nine-tails was a type of whip that was used to discipline sailors on old sailing ships.
The whip had one handle to which was attached nine thin strips of leather, each perhaps three feet long and would be used to administer lashings that would sting and leave welts on the recipient.
The whippings would take place on the deck of the ship, because below deck there was not enough ceiling height to use the cat-o'-nine-tails. Or to put it another way, below decks there was "Not enough room to swing a Cat".
Before springs were used, old bed frames used rope pulled tightly between the frame rails to support a mattress.
If the rope became loose, the mattress would sag which led to uncomfortable sleeping.
Tightening the ropes would help one get a good nights sleep or to "Sleep tight".
