View Full Version : iPod Photo/3G 40GB dock compatibility?

I've seen a lot of talk about which accessories are compatible with the iPod photo but I can't seem to find out if my docks for my 3g 40 GB model will be of any use if I get the new 60GB model.
Anyone have any insight into this one?

No the iPod Photo dock is the only one that works with it. See this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300277

I came across this article too. Here's a quote:
"Important: The iPod Photo Dock can only be used with the iPod Photo. Previous iPod models are not compatible with the iPod Photo Dock. iPod Photo should not be used with previous docks."
I guess I'm wondering what exactly this means. This seems to be saying that you can't use a 3G with this new dock. No problem there, at least as far as I'm concerned. I'm talking about compatability going the other way, using a new one with an old dock. About this, all Apple says is that they 'should not be used'.
Why? What will happen? Will it self-destruct? Will the new one even fit in the old dock if you tried?

Get an ipod photo from a local store and try it with a 3G dock. Post what happens here on ipodlounge.
If it goes up in smoke just take it back and exchange it.

I'm not even going to put my photowithin three feet of my 3g dock. Why? 'Cause Ahpool sed soh.

The 3G definitely works in the iPod photo's dock. After I set up my 60GB photo and dock, I put my 30GB into the new dock to make some last-minute changes to the old baby before I gave it to my sister.
Not sure about vice-versa (photo in a 3G dock) tho. I figure it should, IF you can get it to fit physically. Maybe I'll try it sometime...
