View Full Version : New iPod Photo 40 sitting next to me... new photos inside...

I had just picked up a Ipod 4G 40 last weekend, to be smacked by the release of the new device days later. Luckily, I'm in my return window on the 4G, so it's shipping back tomorrow. An Apple store not too far from my location (the Northridge, California store) actually had several Iphoto 40s in stock today [5 left for anyone in the area who is interested]. They didn't have a display model, but one of the clerks was showing off his personal unit. Honestly, the color display is awesome, and after playing with it a bit, I just couldn't justify not spending the extra $100ish for the upgrade. I could really care less about the photo functionality, but the extra battery life, color display, and cover-art feature would have left me wishing for the iphoto. One more thing for people comparing the devices: the extra size and weight isn't even noticable. I held the 4G 40 and the iphoto side by side and couldn't tell. You can hardly tell when you put them back to back, actually. I can't wait for this bad-boy to finishing charging so I can upload my library!

I'm pretty sure you're right, but they recommend you charge it fully before the first use. Also, as I learned with the 4G, it heats up quite a bit during a long transfer (like the initial dump of your library to the pod). I doubt those high-heat conditions are good for the charging battery.

Ouch, that hurts Crazzy_azz_mat... Your situation isn't without hope, though. If I was 3 days beyound the return window, and felt the draw of the iphoto, I'd consider ebaying. :)

Did you order online? Did you sign for the parcel when it arrived?
Because if you ordered online and didn't have to sign for the parcel you could just phone Apple or whoever you bought it from and say it arrived late, hence making the window a long time.

Here are some picks I just took... they came out pretty poor... especially the pictures of the unit itself. I'm crashing for the night, but I'll take some better quality pictures of the unit, in action, tomorrow when it's charged.

is it necessary to use the docking station to connect it to the tv?

I am soooo jealous. I am still in my return window, but I only have a 20GB, so I don't think I could spend $200 for an extra photo feature I probably wouldn't use. Anyway, good luck with your iPod.

Nope! You can get composite out through the headphone jack of the iPod itself, but if you want S-Video out then you need the dock.

The most awesome thing about this baby is the new typeface. It allows more of the album/track/etc to fit on screen. On top of that, this thing scrolls the name of the album/track/etc (whatever you're browsing) IN THE MENUS. That was my biggest complaint about the ipod... you had to keep somewhat short playlist names so they'd on screen. Not any longer!

I probably would have picked up the 60 if it was in stock when I purchased this one. But about the accesories paying for themselves, both come with identical accessories (dock and the carrying case). My library just isn't big enough to make a difference. I currently use less than 15G of my storage space. I'm sure I'll break the 20G threshold, but I can imagine I'll exceed 40G in the next several years.

No skins yet, but I'm going to modify my Contour case today. The case has four extended rubber lifts on in its back. Even if these weren't present, there are two smaller rubber protectors which would keep it off the case. It seems with a razor blade I'll be able to trim back the tall rubber lifts (to the same height as the smaller ones). I'm almost certain the photo will fit perfectly after the mod. I'll let you know how it goes.

I want that thing bad, I cannot justify it until I buy my new digital SLR, what would really make it perfect would be the ability to connect the camera directly and download the photos.
Anyhow, I guess I will have to make due with my mini for a year or so until I can afford this iPhoto.

It is expensive, but it's not $800.. that's for a 60GB, he got a 40GB. Also if you order a 40GB from Apple.ca it comes out to $640 + Tax, still pricey, but it's only around 110 more than the 4G 40GB...
I will be upgrading my year old 3G 10GB when the 5Gs are relased. I will probably go for the 40GB, but may splurge on a 60GB.. I was going to buy a 4G 40GB this summer, but decided to save up for an iBook, which I received a month ago..
It's very nice to have a job, now I have a steady flow of money, unlike just half a year ago when I would need to wait for Christmas or my Birthday for some money.. :)

Umm.. I am Canadian... On Apple.ca you can get a educational discount, which takes $60 or so off of the iPods. So as I said the 40GB, which the thread starter purchased, costs $640 + Tax after the educational discount.

I was not satisfied at all with the iPod Photo. The only feature that caught my eye was the album art while the song was playing. I think, with all of these improvements some major ones could have / should have been made. Let's see.....built in microphone for recording (Doubles as mic for mac), POSSIBLY built in camera (Cell phones do it) but I can understand where that would go wrong. I am content with my 4G 20GB.

I'm a new pod junkie, so I wasn't aware the top models used to include it. I'd much rather have a free remote than the cheesy belt -case and mini burlap (okay, it's not burlap but it's close enough) carrying sack they included. :)

1. Can you get the Now Playing / album art screens to appear on TV? Or only slideshows?
2. Can you browse photos--instead of just giving a slideshow--on TV? (In other words... can you use the 5x5 thumbnail view on TV, or in full-screen view can you use the wheel to shuttle quickly through photos on TV?)
3. What are the photo transitions like?
4. If you have multiple iCal calendars in different colors, do you see those multiple colors on the screen? Or the whole month just colored blue without regard for iCal's color?
5. Could you by any chance give us a list of everything that's available under Customize Main Menu?
6. Can you FINALLY tell one-eyed jacks from regular jacks in Solitaire? ;) j/k

Now come on, you all knew there was a rumored bigger, better, faster, stronger iPod in the works. No use crying about it. Even now there is probably an 80gig video version in the pipeline. It's the next logical step from photo capabilities. Me, for the price and for what this new iPod does, I think I'll hold off for the video version. Then I think the iPod will be maxed out. Audio and video, what else is there? Silly for me to spend nearly a grand now (i'm in Australia) only to have to spend another grand this time next year. For now the iBook does the same thing, it's just a bit bigger.

wow! it's so nice. I wish that I can have it. but I won't because it's expensive, and has nothing but photo feature addition. you need Belkin photo media reader($100), and so on. so total cost including accesories will be big money I have to pay. I had better wait for 5G ipod, and powerbook G5 next year. iphoto software is still really good to edit, modify pictures.

Hey,
I have a question about the colour screen. On most cellphones with colour screens, the screen is nearly impossible to see without the backlight on. The same applies to the colour iRiver. Once the backlight goes off, the screen goes almost black.
The thing I love about the black and white iPods is that the screen is sharp and easy-to-read even when the backlight is off. I was wondering if the same applies to the colour screened iPods.
Namely, is it feasible to use the iPod with the backlight switched off?
Thanks

Yes--put your slides wherever you synch photos from, and you can output a Keynote/PowerPoint/etc. presentation right to TV, with optional music of your choosing. You have the choice of manual advance, or advance every 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 seconds. No animations of course, just the slides.
You can choose whether to have wipe transitions or not (just right-to-left, I've heard), whether to repeat the photos (or slides) when they're done, and whether to shuffle the images or play them in order.
Best of all: the iPod is the ultimate presentation remote: it shows you a special presentation interface right on the iPod screen--different from what the audience sees on TV! The TV shows just the current photo, but the iPod screen shows three thumbnails, so you can see the previous and next images too. Cool!

1 & 2. Only the photos show up on the TV output. No other TV-out feed is available.
3. The transitions, when turned-on, just wipe in the new picture (from the left to the right) over the current picture. There aren't multiple transition types as best I can tell.

It would definitely be a hassle to use the screen w/o the backlight. In a bright room the screen is visible, but I'd say the backlight is a must.

w00t i too got my ipod Photo last week and let me tell you this thing rocks!!!
1) the screen looks super awsome
2) pictures look super awsome
3) everything is awsome!
now the downside
a little thicker and heavier but i think its still thin and light compared to some others!
its a little slow viewing pictures, if you try to view thumbnails and then a full screen pic too quickly it will show a black screen, and sometime i have to hold down the play-pause button 2 or 3 times before it shuts off, but nothing that cant be fixed in a future update!

Thanks for the report. I think the "normal"/"beginner" way to turn off an iPod is just to leave it alone... it will shut off if not used. If you want to force it off, you hold the pause button for a time. Are you saying it takes longer a longer press than you expect vs. other iPods?
A question... how fast can you shuffle through photos with the wheel, in full-screen view?
And a more random Q... in Parachute are you killing the parachute people, or shooting down the helicopters, or both?

In both the thumbnail view and in the fullscreen view, the navigation thru pictures is lightning fast. In full screen, you can move thru pictures as fast as you can push the |<< and >>| buttons.
And a more random Q... in Parachute are you killing the parachute people, or shooting down the helicopters, or both?
I say shoot anything that moves. Tip of the day, save ammo and try to get the helicopters before the paratroopers take flight.

This happens to me all the time, also. This is something that never happened to me on my 4G, actually. It's annoying, but not terribly.

Or you could just not hold down pause and let the iPod fall asleep on its own. You save absolutely no power putting it to sleep manually.

I'm sure you lose a bit of power, just very unnoticeable ;) But I also prefer the thought that knowign your iPod is off, rather than leaving it at times.

Now I really want to ditch my 3rd gen 10gb for a photo 40gb,but seeing as im only 14 with no job,it wont happen soon. And the saving begins! I need a bigger one anyway since I only have about 350mb left.

How about using it outside in the natural sunlight with backlight on? I find my cellphone is terribly hard to read in the sun with its color screen, but some have been saying that iPod's new lcd is supposed to keep visibility from being poor outside. What's your experience with this been like? I wouldn't want to be walking around with something I can't easily read outside, heheh :)

The "transflective" LCD may be better than a laptop which goes TOTALLY black without a backlight. But that doesn't mean it will be easy to read without one. Reviews seem to agree that without the light, 4G B&W pods are easier to see that the color screens. WITH backlight, the color screens are supposed to be the best ever.
That's OK with me, just so I can see SOMETHING and then let the backlight come on automatically when I touch the controls. The backlight sleeps automatically, and the battery is the biggest ever, so I'll gladly use the backlight.

In sunlight and without the backlight it's a pain to see. Not impossible, but it'll take more than a casual glance. With the backlight it's superb.

Thanks nagromme and bitsculptor for both of your replies. It's great to hear it's really visibile outside with the backlight... I have a 3G and I use the backlight almost all the time, so I'm sure I won't have a problem with using it on these improved battery life iPods, too, haha :D

Wow, it looks incredible! I was sceptical at first because the official photos look like they're computer generated and I didn't think that it would have such a high resolution screen, but it really looks fantastic.

The official photos ARE computer generated :) The high-res screen views anyway. Some products like the PowerMac G5 have even the hardware computer-generated at Apple.com.

That was my biggest complaint about the ipod... you had to keep somewhat short playlist names so they'd on screen. Not any longer!
oh no... you have me so excited. mine should be in the mail tomorrow. i feel like a kid on christmas eve.
but i didn't know about this!!! my biggest complaint about my old ipod was that i couldn't read full track names in the menus. i have a lot of remixes and it would take some work finding the right one i was looking for. but no more.. yay! that's worth an extra $100 right there.
Yea the ipod is visible outside in the light. I think it has a TFT screen like sum cell phones. The track anmes do scroll across if they r long. I don't like how its like that when ur playing a song with a long name cuz it kinda uses the battery. I would prefer if it just stayed there. Its worth the investment. The longer bat. life and the color screen make it worth it. The ability to view photos just tops it off. It's not noticebly heavier or thicker than teh 4g 40gb ipod. I didn't see much difference when using it.

"Transflective" is the term for this type of LCD. Looks like a laptop or cell phone screen--but unlike a laptop, outside light HELPS you see the display instead of hurting. There hasn't been a single bright sunny day since I got mine, though.
I don't think the scrolling uses much battery--probably very little CPU power (and no HD power) compared to the constant math used in simply decrypting/decompressing audio on the fly.
Difference vs. the 4G 40 is about 1.5 mm, hardly anything. I bought the PodSleevz meant for the 4G 40 and Photo, and it fits perfectly. (I like the sleeve a lot so far--screen opening's a little lopsided, but the feel is great and the controls work through the case just fine.)
