Well, I've just discovered podcasting and I'm really enjoying it. I am however having difficulty finding some really good feeds. Could anyone recommend me any good podcast feeds?

Ok so maybe no ones heard of podcasting, which is surprising on an ipod forum. Check out www.ipodder.org if youre interested in having radio feeds and mp3s sent to your ipod automatically.

There is a category listing for podcast on ipodder:

http://www.ipodder.org/directory/4/podcasts/categories

You can also find feeds on podfeeder:

http://www.podfeeder.com/

Anyway, if you Google for "podcast directory" or "podcast listing", you'll find plenty of stuff.

Good tips.

Do you have to use iTunes to pod cast?

Personnally, whenever I try to get into podcasting, I don't know which feeds are good. For example, if I am looking for daily news, I don't now which ones are good or local.

I listen to the source code, its a must, run by adam curry who was a former mtv vj. He puts good stuff on his show. He's the real deal most of the other people sound crappy but still talk about interesting issues.

the content's limited right now; I mean bloggercon and blog meetups? Guys talking about Halo 2?!? NERDS! Seriously though, I'm guessing I keep up to date with rss and tech sites more than the average person, but I don't want to hear bloggers talk about the future of reporting weird news items and political diatribe on the net. Other than that, it's mostly mainstream music and airamerica broadcasts and the novelty of having someone choose your music for you.
The NPR updates look promising... are there any CBC or BBC broadcasts? This American Life maybe? College radio broadcasts?

So is it basically just recording live web feeds and putting them on your iPod as audio files?

On my iPod i got all the Radio Stations from Grand Theft Auto Vice City and I got 2 stand up comedy acts of Eddie Murphy

Yes it is, it's all done automatically and I'm guessing outside of iTunes. Most of the casts are homebrewed amateur pieces, some music singles and I saw a few air america pieces too.

All we need is some radio pirating, i used to convert RA streams to listen on my iPod.

I'm using Replay Radio to record a LOT of NPR stuff. Not actully podcasting, I don't think, but still inexpensive NPR to go!

It's always cool to meet anothe NPR fan! Like This American Life?

Got into this podcasting thing over Xmas. So far apart from Curry's Daily Source Code the only podcast I still subscribe to is the openpodcast.org where people send in shows of no more than 5 mins, most are hit and miss but I think its gonna be the best way to find new shows.....

I use ipodder to automate the downloading of the feeds but seem to be having difficutly getting it to automate the download scheduling....

If I find any good comedy (and not just the surreal crap) I'll post about it.

My favs are:

Engadget (an absolute must, great stuff)
Reel Reviews (www.mwgblog.com)
Eric Rice's podcast

I'm working on my first one (www.communityguy.com)

Podcasting is, at it's root nothing more than a way to automatically sync audio files.

Use a program like Doppler Radio to input the RSS feed of the podcast(s) you are interested in. Then on a regularly scheduled basis, that app will grab any new audio files (can be talk, music, whatever) download them, move them into iTunes (or other management tool, I assume), create a playlist for that "channel". And of course, once you sync your iPod, it automatically updates your iPod with those new files.

So after adding the RSS feed URL to Doppler (or other app), you never touch it again, but every time there's new content from the places you are "monitoring", the content is just on your iPod. It to radio what TIVO is to TV.

And it's VERY cool.

How do you find the RSS feed URL though? How can you tell if it is the one that you are looking for?

I've actually started producing a podcast lately.

I record it on my Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 Linux PDA and then convert and upload it when I get to work. I record when I'm in the car on my way to work.

Podcasting is fun and pretty easy.

I've been looking for a good way to listen to NPR on my iPod also. Audible is definitely an easy way to go, but it ain't cheap. I started playing with Replay Radio and it works well, but I found the lack of bookmarks frustrating. Converting the mp3's that RR outputs to AAC and then changing the file extension from m4a to m4b works, but it's cumbersome. Soooo, my solution was to use the FAAC encoder as a custom encoder in Replay Radio. It passes in the title info so it shows up perfectly on my mini, complete with bookmarks. Sweet and cheap!

Ok. Shameless plug ahead:
If any of you are anti-radio and looking for some amazing indie bands, I produce a weekly Podcast called Insomnia Radio @ http://hardcoreinsomniaradio.blogspot.com

Basically, the best music you've never heard. Give me about 50 minutes of your time, and I guarantee you'll find your new favorite band....

People are taking notice of the show, including this site, Wired Magazine, and Maximum PC..

Please give me a listen, and throw your feedback at me, good or bad..

thanks gang.

You dont have to subscribe to a podcast in order to get one or two do you?

genemean
06-29-2005, 08:13 PM
you don't have to subscribe to a feed. Most podcasts have setup websites that offer direct downloads of their episodes.

podcastpickle or podcastalley are both excellent directory sites to check out

hmmm So once you click "Subscribe" can you "unsubscribe" by just deleting the podcast from your Podcast DIR?

neb

Well, you can simply unsubscribe by simply clicking the button of the same name. It's easy to get carried away and subscribe to everything in sight, I myself have subscribed to 7 podcasts. Fortunately you can unsubscribe just as easily, useful when you're exploring and trying to find your regular fixes.

Check out the This Week in Science podcast. It's hosted by a hot, brainy girl and her smart-### Adam Corrola type sidekick. They cover interesting science and technology news like cloning, space exploration, cybernetics, etc and do it in a real entertaining way.
