Hello,

First I would like to thanks everyone involved in this site for such great help and information.

Ok, next Friday I'm buying a 4G 20GB ipod. My goal is to carry it with me as well as in my car. I was looking at getting the new Alpine In-dash CD Player (CDA-9831) to use it with my ipod so here are my questions.

* Alpine have a AUX input which means I can connect my ipod to it, so if I don't want to CONTROL the ipod using the Alpine does that mean I still have to buy the Alpine adapter?

Again I don't need to control the ipod using my head unit I can simply browse my library using the ipod, of course I have to get the other car accessories but that's not an issue, my concern is if I can just plug and play, anyone with this set up? thanks folks.

youre talking about doing what i have already done, its really easy to do yourself. all you need to be able to do is get your head unit out of the dash (tells you how in the manual) and buy one of these: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Ob4MnWgtQ5M/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=57900&I=500KCA121B

just plug the unit into the ai-net plug on the back of the head unit, and youre set. currently i have mine hooked up into that, and a 3' rca -> phone plug that runs into my glove box. this works, but is not ideal.

my next project is to get the belkin auto charger and configure that so i can just plug it in and get a true line out, trust me... that's what you want. after listening to my ipod though the phone out, it sounds horrid.

Thanks a lot. Why would anyone pay for the Apine Adapter?

because its an easier way of doing things. maybe i've had bad luck with aux adapters as they never worked for me (maybe i just don't know what i'm doing as i went through two of them) but i can say i have used the 420i for the past 5 weeks about. First 4 weeks with a 9825 HU and now with a 9835 HU and the 420i does a great job. The reason I exchanged the 9825 for the 9835 is personal - if i couldn't get an extra $200 off the HU I would have NEVER bought the 9835 but since I had the chance I jumped at it and of course the sound is 100times better than the 9825. But don't get me wrong - I was very very impressed with what the 9825 could do at such a cheap price. Good value.

Anyway I find the 420i the best way to get your car iPod'ed - for now. It will change in a year of course but for this year, this is the best way to do it...

I was going thru what you are going thru 3 months ago.

I just got the KCA-420i & i like it. The benifits of having this is that its much easier & safer to control your ipod while driving. Try driving 110 mph on the freeway while reading the small print on the ipod. Its not easy & safe and After a while you get annoyed.

If u dont want the adapter make sure u buy an Ai-net Alpine HU.i have a 9827 which is only $230 and does everything.

Connections is easy. if youre not gonna install the head unit yourself, then as your getting the hu installed i would also get the ipod installed as well. if u plan on doing it yourself, all u have to do is pull the hu out and plug in the Ai-net aux input rca cable to the back of the hu. then get an monster icable for best sound & quality and plug in into the Ai-net aux input rca cable & your done.
