I purchased the Sony MDR-V600's ($99) today thinking they were the V6's. I have been choosing between the HD280's and the V6's...some say the iPod doesn't have enough power to push the 280's. I am, however impressed with the V600's. Lots of clear bass (listen to a lot of techno/rock/rap) - but the volume level has to be at 90-95% for a good loud sound. Should I take these back and go with the V6's or 280's, OR suck it up because these will do just fine?

thanks in advance for any input-

Over at head-fi they're pretty adamant about the V6 being a much better phone than the V600. I've not heard the V600, but I do agree that the V6 sounds great. Still, my guess is that it's not going to be much easier to drive from the iPod. If you're at 90-95% volume, an amp would really be needed to get the best sound.

If I were you I would take them back, just going by what I've read. The V6's are pretty cheap now. Maybe buy both and take back whichever you like the least.

I am probably going to take them back. I do like the way they sound though...I can't imagine something sounding better - shows my lack of experience. Would you recommend the 280's?

I have the v600's and love them...

I haven't heard the HD280s. I just did some quick searches and here's what I found:

And check this out. Seems the V6 is a better choice from the iPod:

Edit: The more I read, it seems like the Audio-Technica A500 might be the the best phone in that price range out of the iPod. Might want to look into it.

I appreciate the input - I am probably going to get the V6's from Etronics - $70. The A500's look a little crazy for wearing out in public. Thanks again for the help.
