Just picked up my new Gen4 20GB iPod from the local Apple Store. Installed the software on the CD and plugged the device in when it instructed to - but nothing happened. I do here the little XP noise that sounds when something is inserted, but no visual cues (at the system tray).

In the device manager window, I noticed that the Apple iPod was listed but with the little exclamation mark next to it. The device was giving the "Code 10" error (This device cannot start).

I updated my drivers for the sound card (which holds the firewire plug), and that didn't work. Now the device appears to be listed as "UNKNOWN VENDOR AND MODEL IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device" - which still gives off the Code 10 error.

I've search the forums for this problem, but can't seem to find a conclusive answer....<?> I've also reset the iPod as well. Any help would be appreciated! :)

UPDATE:

Now the device is listed under "Disk Drives" in the device manager as "Apple Computer_Inc. iPod IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device" once again - but the problem still exists.

To fix the hardware not found issue try:
plug in ipod
go into device manager
find iPod and remove it (only if it shows as an unknown device)
unplug iPod from the computer
Completely uninstall iTunes, or anything relating to the ipod.
Reboot.
Pop iPod CD in and install
It's important to put the CD in to do the reinstall because it has usb drivers that can't be reinstalled by just loading iTunes.

Thanks Honeybee - I'll try that.

I did call Apple Technical Support, and they told me that iPod apparantly do not work with XP Service Pack 2 when using the CD drivers that come with the iPod.

I had to uninstall all of the things that the CD installed and install some other iPod updater that they gave me the link to. Sad to say it didn't work.

The next option was to check the firewire manufacturer. Since it didn't have one, they suggested I buy firewire card that is recommended by Apple. So I went to Best Buy just now, and I'm about to install it.

Gonna try your suggest first though :)

Ok, I've figured out the reason why I got the "This Device Cannot Start" error in the Device manager...

Apparantly if you're running a generic Firewire port/card Apple doesn't like to use it. So you have to get one that apple likes. You can choose from this list here:

I got the Belkin one (F5U503-APL) XP recognized it right away, and everything's working great right now. It was about $40 at Best Buy.
