No, if I remember there were two color options for the phones... gold and silver. The phones were the same. The only differences in e888 are the plugs (LP/SP).

Only mdr-e888lp has the gold/black colour, and they are only available in Asia. I rarely see people talking about these phones. From my experience, they are damn good. :)

Do these phones need a long burn-in period? I heard a lot of reviews talking how good they sound, but some said they are very uncomfortable. I have been looking around for a while, but I can't find the gold one yet.

At first, the e888 would sound pretty bad with no mid range at all, but after I burnt in the phones for two weeks. Their whole sound changed to an oustanding earbud!! Some people complain that the phones wouldnt fit in their ear properly, but I dont have any problem. May be a little expensive, but you will be happy with them, I practically guarantee it.

This site is the only place I could find them in gold:

Like Jackson said, gold was an Asian version.

I highly doubt they require a long burn-in period, if they require one at all. I agree that they sound very good. I can't see how they're uncomfortable at all. They feel like most earbuds and are more comfy than the iBuds, for sure.
