Ahh... so I finally recieved my touch wheel 20gb Winpod today in the mail. I paid 320 for it from a guy over the internet, so naturally there was no receipt. So I get home today, open up the box and there it is, still sealed and everything. First thing, I go up to CompUSA. They will not sell my the TAP because I don't have an original sales reciept. They write down the number for their TAP program and tell me that I can do it through them. I call the number, they say that CompUSA should be able to sell me the warranty even without an original sales receipt. I call the manager of my local CUSA and tell them this. They put me on hold and finally tell me that they can sell me the coverage, but when I go to use it, that it will be denied because I don't have the original receipt. I get off the phone and call the TAP number again and ask for the same guy. I can hear some whispering and the guy comes on, telling me that he was wrong before and he found out that I needed to have a proof of purchase to recieve warranty service.:mad:

I'm pretty fed up with CompUSA by now. I really need some suggestions. Hurry up, because I'm dying to open this thing up and see what all the fuss is about.

try another compusa or a best buy. i remember reading somewhere in the old fora, that best buy examined the ipod and finding it to be working without problems, sold that user an extended warrenty plan even though he didn?t have his original receipt either. sorry, no guarantee.

It was me, and I had my original receipt. If you bought it off of ebay than there had to be some kind of invoice, paypal or whatever. I would investigate it further.

My personal experience:

I walked into CompUSA with a broken iPod and no paperwork whatsoever.

They were able to look it up in the computer (though it wasn't their "normal" computer, it's a special program they have that's meant only for looking up warranties), and I was able to use my TAP. The whole process took like 10 minutes.

Their computer program showed 'em that yes, I have paid for a TAP, and that yes, the item that's in my hands is covered by the "class" of TAP that I bought. No original receipt from when I bought the iPod was needed. No receipt from when I purchased the TAP was needed. Just my broken iPod and a friendly, helpful manager-ess.

PS: CompUSA in Tacoma, Washington has an excellent crew with a very nice manager!

Yeah, i bought mine online too. No original receipt. I just printed out the email confirmation, and compusa accepted it alright.

I inquired about TAP at the compusa near by my work place, they said i got to bring the original receipt and ipod must not be opened from its original package. I ended up buying my TAP at another compusa near by my home. Their procedures were completely different from what the other compusa guy told me. I didn't need original receipt, and they told me it'd be ok even if i opened the box (as long as the ipod was funtioning at the time i bought my TAP).

Bottom line -- try different compusa.

I just called Bestbuy and the rep told me that they will not warranty the iPod if it was purchased elsewhere. This was the guy that answered the phone from their central office, not the guy from my local store. What did you say when you went in there to get your PRP?

I originally bought my iPOD from BestBuy. They just let me get the 4 year PSP when I showed my receipt and also when I brought it in and showed that it worked. When I was looking at getting an extended warranty I also talked to CompUSA. They would have sold me a TAP no problem. I just had to bring in my original receipt and proved to them that my iPOD was fully operational. I think CompUSA would be your bet bet.

Best buy will not sell any warranty plan to any products that were not purchased from Best buy.

hmmm... the other day i ordered an iPod from dell at the $80 discount and decided to forget about the TAP. anyone think upon recieving the iPod from dell could i go to compUSA and buy a TAP for it? the tap would be great, but saving $140 (400 for 15gb at compusa and 60 for the TAP) was more important to me. if i kept the iPod sealed in its original packaging could i take it to a compusa store and would they let me get a tap? that would be ideal, and i would get an iPod with a full warranty for $20 less then retail :)

IMHO the hugely praised warranties are a ploy; these big companies make huge amounts of money from people that are afraid that they will break their device; that out of the way (;) ) Try Best Buy (though I really don't like the customer service). I have had bad experiences at CompUSA as well, they have terrible customer service.

What telephone number did they give you to purchase the TAP? I wouldn't mind calling them and seeing about getting my 30GB covered.

sounds like the best way to do it is to just go in and talk to an employee... ask for a tap and throw down 60 dollars and they will give you one...
