You haven't listed any of your iPod/PC/Mac spec's but in my experience:
1. open the iPod software (not iTunes) so that you get the little rectangle box asking you to insert an iPod (something like that). 2. Insert your iPod and then wait for it to be detected. If it doesn't then you have a fireware/usb link problem. otherwise,
3. just hit restore and you should be fine.
Doing it this way doesn't open iTunes for me so you don't have to worry about that.
Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

Mmm. In the case of win98 I'm afraid I can offer no further help as am an XP user. Can suggest a couple of things though.
It might be worth trying to do restore it on a different machine, perhaps one with XP? Not sure if it would then work on win98 but its worth a try.
Other than that, you could update your own computer to XP. win98 is pretty damn old now so its surprising that people are still using it. If its becasue they are not too hot with computers, I'm sure they have friends that are and could do it for them.
If this still doesn't work, I suppose your iPod could be faulty. Might be worth taking it back where you got it and then they could either have a look at it themselves and then restore it or replace it.
Hope this helps.
