what is the "true" cost of the 420i - i know retail says $99 but when I got mine installed yesterday the shop tried to sell it to me for $130. After much haggling and debating the manager caved in and said "Fine $99" I know its only an extra $30 but still... are shops trying to sell them OVER retail??? Not really fair as the 420i is readily available in my area at 4 different Alpine dealers.
Just curious if people out there are also seeing this over retail

I think retailers are trying to fool us that because this set up is new it is exclusive as well. If I was you I would give your business to one of the other 3 shops which have it in stock rather than the one trying to get an extra $30.
Here in Britain at least the price of stereo equipment varys wildly and shops quote RRP (recommended retail prices) that are ??100s more than you can buy it for in a legitimate shop. A lot of the uk ebay stuff is stolen and comes with no papers. All you can do is shop around and see if the deal is worth it (ie if you need fitting etc.) The shop I visited yesterday were more than willing to haggle and throw in fitting for free so I think that is the way I will go. I will let you know how much when I get a final quote but you will think $99 is a bargain compared to UK prices I promise.

if i had it my way the 420i would cost $30 max! its just a box with some circuits and stuff, haha.
It was funny because after I demanded the manager to go to the Alpine webpage he caved and said, "ok ok ok, damn man, $99"
I have to give them props for doing the install so clean and sweet. But as I called the other shops prices varied from $110, $120, $130. Strange huh...

YEAH for now that is the best deal I've seen.
But I hear by xmas time the price is supposed to be $60 so I'm not too sure about Alpine playing with the price... maybe they did do a limited release so they are selling them at a premium. The shop where I bought it from said it will drop to $60 around thanksgiving/xmas time. Who knows where they got that info from...

went to ed and al's and the guy quoted me $130 I laughed in his face and went to a different local alpine authorized shop who quoted me $200 for the 9825 and $100 for the 420i, he installed everything for $380 including tax, which would have been about the same as al and ed's but to tell someone your charging more than the RETAIL price listed on a website is a complete joke.
be carefull, there are plenty of 420i's circulating now, there is noone with it "exclusively".
