does the i net from alpine work with my estereo
and my 3 gen 40 g ipod

I do not believe it will work for the Ai-Net iPod controllers, however, there are other ways to hardwire your iPod.

If I get what you are asking, then all you need is the new kca-420i from alpine. It will plug in the Ai-net socket in your stereo and into the dock port of your pod. The whole thing is $80 and quite easy to fit to your stereo (just plug and go)

Ahh, but the problem is dude, that stereo I don't think has the Ai-Net socket that we assume it to have.
