I HATE the earphones that came with my new 4G iPod. Is Apple's in-ear phones a good solution, especially for running and working out, or is there something better? I sweat a lot, and the pair I have now is always coming out. Sony? I would like to pay no more than $50. Thanks!

Well, in-ears are better as far as staying in but they have their own drawbacks. Because they plug your ears, you now get to hear all sorts of internal body sounds such as chewing and footsteps. Chewing isn't generally an issue but the sounds of your feet hitting the ground may bother you. Its noticeable when walking, so with running, it will be worse. That being said, many people don't really have an issue with it. Its something that after a minute or two, your brain filters out.

You may want to give the griffin ear jams a try. They convert the iPod headphone to in-ears for only $15. Could be a way to try in-ears without spending much.

I would get a different set of headphones. The Apple buds are fine for what they are - free buds that come with your player - but if you can do a lot better even at your price range. If you want ear buds you should look at the Sennheiser MX500s. If you want more traditional headphones try the Koss Portapros. A lot of people here like the Sony EX71s, but I have not tried them personally. I wouldn't spend money on the Apple in-ear buds. You are paying too much for the Apple label. In fact, as a general rule if you are running you shouldn't use anything that blocks too much outside noise, it's dangerous.

I use the Shure E2's and they are awesome. I skateboard every day with them, and they are great. I can't hear ANYTHING around me. Not my feet on the pavement, my breathing, the rough wheels on the asphault.

I recommend them.

Oh yeah, and they will NEVER fall out of your ears.

just go buy a pair of high end earphones so you dont have to go back and forth between cheap ones and expensive ones and then end up like me keeping buying and selling headphones and wasting a lot of money. You can get shure e2 for 69 ( what a awkward number the company chose) on earphonesolutions, just search ipodlounge and you will find a coupon for 30 usd off.

e2 is not an awkward number. fyi there was an e1 but it was discontinued. in regards to the original poster. i ahve the e2s and theyre great BUT you have to be very careful where you are running. since it blocks out most of the outside noise, you could be putting yourself at risk by running in areas where vehicles are (or other harmful things). but the e2s are great to run with since the wire is so thick that microphonics doesnt occur

lol I think justgotmyipod was referring to "69" as the awkward number, not "e2".

But anyway, I am currently saving up for the Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL earphones in white (http://www.ipodcases.biz/modules.php?name=catalog&file=product_info&cPath=28&products_id=61). I've never tried Shures myself or seen anyone with them. Aren't they like top-of-the-range pro earphones or something? The phones I mentioned are about 90 NZD so I think that'll be around about 50 ~ 60 USD.

Try buring them in. It took about three or four days of continuously playing them at or just above normal listening volume for several hours each day before the sound became tolerable. Now they get better all the time. The diaphram is so small that it is not very flexible, so as you use them it becomes looser and the base will start to come through. Also, a good seal is imperitive. They sound hollow if they are not sealed correctly and getting a good seal takes practice.

I run 3 to 4 times a week.

The Apple in-ear cans are pretty good for running, but drown out outside sound, and you can hear your feet pounding pavement when on hard surfaces.

I have a pair of ex71's, but so far am not feeling the love. Plus, the little cable split thingy bounces all over the place. Not good for running.

My advice: Sony makes a pair of underrated headband phones that I usually use to run -- MDR-A44L or something. Good deal right now at buy.com. Only around $25 or so.

Oh, MikeM:

the Griffin earjams aren't shipping yet according to that weblink. Is there another place to find them?

Also have you compared them to the Jabara ear gels (similar solution)?

I would not recommend the apple in ear phones for running. I use them at work and they slip out when I move around a lot.
I would recommend something that goes over your ear to not knock out sound. I'd be afraid to knock out all sound while running.

Wait...I don't run. ;)
