I have a new 40G iPod. I successfully installed the software and initially formatted the iPod. But I am getting nowhere from there. The iPod freezes both iTunes and iPod updater, and does not show up most of the time on iTunes. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software but to no joy. I am using Windows XP, with a USB port to connect iPod with computer.

If anyone can explain to me in simple, non-technical terms a way of getting this piece of equipment to work, I would be very grateful. I am on the verge of taking it back to the shop and getting my money back - it all seems too much of a hassle...

If you can, get a firewire card. I have heard far fewer complaints from people using firewire than those using usb

Hi,

Thanks for that - the trouble is, I have absolutely no idea what a firewire card is! How much is it going to cost? How on earth does one install it? Will it definately fix the problem?

I had an iPod mini which worked perfectly well using USB. I can't understand why this is happening. When I bought the iPod, I did not imagine that it would be anything less than very simple to get it up and working. Why don't apple advertise it as something for techies only?

Will the firewire card definately get it working easily, or am I throwing good money after bad?

A firewire card should solve it, but I can't guarantee that it will . Google it or EBAY it and I bet you can find one for $15 or less. It is installed just like any other card in the main cpu box and should be plug and play.

Cheers for that. I read somewhere that there are "apple recommended" firewire cards. Do you know which these are?
