Yes I am curious about this questions as well as I have a 9825 installed in my car. Is installation hard? My local stereo shop has a bunch of these new KCA's in stock and I am going tomorrow to check them out. He said he could install the unit but he would have to take the cd unit back out... kinda a pain.

Anyone? Will the 9825 be compatible with the 420i?

I would wait for the more iPod friendly 2005 model Alpine head units...

according to my local stereo shop (who just opened) the guy told me that the 9825/26 are compatible with the 420i

he said that the newer 05 models will have some sort of easier interface but if you already have a 9825/26 installed its still no problem to hook up the 420i but he also suggested if you are looking to buy a new HU it might be wise to wait for the 05 models to come out soon...

Question 1: Yes you can select songs, but the only way I've found so far, is you have to say select a Artist/Album/Playlist first, then press the search button twice on the head unit and it will display all the songs for that Artist/Album/Playlist.

Question 2: Any Alpine head unit is good for the 420i as long as they have the Ai-Net, which most do, and as long as they have do the mp3, then it's all good, other wise if you don't get one that supports mp3, you won't get the text display on the headunit. If you have the money, I'd go for a 9835, I just bought that 2 weeks ago. it's a sweet headunit.

That's not the case. I have a 9820XM that does not support MP3 playback and all text functions with the iPod work just fine.

Really? That was one of the reason's I upgraded to the 9835, but it works fine, I guess with out MP3 playback.

Maybe it was CDText function that it needs.

Ok guys, just got everything installed and the 420i works like a charm! You HAVE to get this set up as it is the best investment I've made in car audio in a long time. I doubt I'll even use cds anymore!

The shop had a bunch of 420i's in stock and the guy that installed it had no idea what it was for. But he did an excellent job in installing everything... I have no idea where he hid the 420i in my dash board, I can't even see it no matter how hard I look in there. I have the cable snaked into the glovebox.

I'm a happy camper now, the best in car solution ! a must have for any iPod owner.

Yes it is a great, great investment for any iPod owner, I love not having to drag my CD case of 200 CD's around! Can easly change the song, or CD since all my playlist is Artist - Album. So it's easy to navigate by CD.
