Hi,

I have just received a 15g ipod. Most of my MP3's have been ripped for a previous philips/nike psa2 128mb player at 160kbps with MMJB.

I have been reading about the LAME menas of ripping MP3's. Is this really better than the method used by MMJB and if so, can someone recommend a easy all in one ripper that uses the LAME method as from reading already it seems you have to have a couple of separate bits of software to do this.

In addition, will ephpod2 put my MMJB playlists onto the IPod.

Thanks,

CDex is probably the easiest, and EAC the best but harder to use.

ephPOD can put any .m3u file onto you iPod, so you shouldn't have any problems.

Yea... what Bill said. CDex is much better than any CD ripping tool Ive ever used, and its free.

Then you haven't used EAC. EAC is the best ripper available, but is a lot harder to use than CDex.

Is there any guide to using EAC? I seem to have lots of beginning/ending silence on my rip.

OK downloaded CDex and ripping the MP3's. It is very slow. hwat versions of tags does it give it? I am not sure that I need the v2 tags as the name album title and genre does for me.

I also have real player. What deos anyone think about the mp3's that it rips as I have done some using this.

if i uninstall musicmatch which I am close to doing, how will I create playlists as I have read that ephpod only creates them on the ipod.

thanks

And you think CDex is slow? You have to realize that it's slow because it is giving you a better mp3 than MMJB would. Oh, and EAC is even slower.

I'm not sure what Real player uses, but I would guess that it would be Fraunhofer and no, those mp3's would not be good at anything other than 128Kps, or lower.

You can use winamp to make playlists. I'd advise you to get winamp classic at http://classic.winamp.com.

OK Thanks for the advice irish

I have now got winamp and have uninstalled musicmatch

so your advice would be that any I have ripped using real I should do again. I have ripped the real ones at 160kbps and have about 50 albums already done this way

thanks again

Do a couple of test rips and compare. If you can't hear a difference then keep the ripped ones you have, and if you can then you can decide whether to start over again.

Ugh...I went through the entire process for the best quality mp3's in the world thing with EAC and LAME and the MP3's are taking 20 minutes for EACH ONE! What gives? Is there a subsitute that will work just as good?

I get what you pay for. The reason it take so long is the EAC is so accurate in ripping the songs. As I said, rip a few, listen to them and compare. If you can't hear the difference, or if it's not worth the time, then stick with MMJB.

I usually rip them while I'm watching a baseball game, net surfing or reading some email. And don't let anyone tell you to try CDex because it is quicker. It is, but I don't think you'd even like it's speed.

For a discussion of why EAC is so good, check out this article http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=107.

Grr...I don't have patience for this program, but I came across another.

Easy CD-DA Extractor 6 seems to do wonders for me. It even converts them in one step and allows you to select the kbps and quality. No flaws in the music so far, so this works fine for me and should for everyone else.

Bill,

What do you think of the CD ripper for winamp3 by the pokoisoft people (the same ones that do easy CDA creator)

www.pokoisoft.com

If it is OK, that will go very nicely with the winamp player.

How can I tell if it uses LAME technology

I've heard of this one, but never have used it. The three programs I use to rip, in order are EAC, CDex, and Audiograbber. Audiograbber is the best at ripping copy-protected CD's, but I really don't use it to encode. I will take the wav's it gives me and encode them with RazorLame.

BTW, I have read some things on the internet that disturb me with regard to Pokisoft, so check google out and do a little research. Oh, and do seem to use Lame.

Bill,

Thanks for the advice. Anyway, I am all guns blazing now. I have been using CDex for the last two nights and have over 150 albums ripped. They sound great and so I have re-ripped the ones I did in real.

I have ordered them in winamp and also retagged some of them.

All my songs have the id31 tag and only some of them have the id32 tag. Is this OK, as I have heard that there may be problems transferring using ephpod (which I have downloaded).

I am now all ready to go if I can persuade my girlfriend to give me the ipod early at the weekend.

Thanks again. I may be back if I have problems transferring the songs.

Yes, get rid of the id3v1 tags. ID3-Taggit has an option that will remove them, so all you have to do is select the songs and hit F11 and the id3v1 tags are gone.

I do not have the microsoft.net framework installed on my PC and am reluctant to do so because of conflicts with other software I have. I downloaded ID3 tagit and it would not work because of this.

Is there any other software that will do this?

If you go a little further down there is the older version 2.3.4 that doesn't need it, which is the one I use, since I don't want the .net framework either.

Bill, thanks for this.

I will download that at home tonight.

Have checked and I will get the ipod at the weekend and cannot wait. Feel like a kid again!!!

Hope I won't have to come back to you again, but will let everyone know how I am getting on in the My ipod and I forum
