My Wish: Adapter for proprietary connector

I think an adapter that converts the proprietary port to a standard firewire port would be really helpfull... Especially with the old car chargers for the ipod. Anyone agree on that?

That would be interesting... except for you'd have to lug a (somewhat) bulky adapter around with your iPod.

I keep waiting for someone to release this adapter. I can't believe nobody is jumping on this opportunity. They could probably sell one of these to everyone who bought a firewire auto cord (I have a white coiled cored).

Yes, I know about the belkin charger for the 3rd gen ipod.

Yes, I know about the 3rd party auto charger which comes with a standard firewire "port" on it.

The simple fact of the matter is that I would prefer not to spend $40 on the belkin charger. I also don't want to have to buy another proprietary apple cable ($19).

Has anyone found one of these yet? I would guess that at 7.99 or 9.99 these would be big sellers.

IF someone dosen't manufacture something you like, try making it yourself. Your idea for this adaptor is very interesting, and is very feasable to make with just about $25. First, order a $19.99 dock connector-firewire cable from Apple. Cut the cable, and sort out the various wires. Use a multimeter to see which wire corresponds to which pin on the firewire connector. DIscard the end with the male firewire connector and keep the dock connector end. Now, use that extra $5 to buy a cheap firewire extension cord (male on one end and female on the other). Cut it in two, and keep the female end. Now, do the same here, where you figure out which wire corresponds to which pin. Simply solder the dock connector cable and the female firewire connector together with the pins in their corresponding places, use electrical tape to provide some insulation, and then maybe put a casing around the place where they were joined, just for asthetics, and you're done. You now have a "converter" between the iPod's dock connector and firewire, though it may look really makeshift and detract from the overall attractiveness of your iPod.

I actually wish they never made the dock at all. I use my pod at home and at work, between a PC and a MAC. I installed a firewire card on my PC for this reason. Worked fine on my 2nd-gen, since it has a straight-up FW port. But now with the farkin' proprietary dock on the 3rd gens, I have to carry the pod AND the dock back and forth, instead of just the pod. Annoying.

You could purchase an additional stand. They're about $39 if I remember correctly. But the adapter mentioned before is a great deal and more useful if you're upgrading from a gen 2 device. I've preordered mine!
