Im considering putting linux on my ipod. Im a little worried. Does have the same exact layout (oraganize music, have the same menues) and just add stuff or is completely different. If I decided that I wanted to get rid of it and restore my ipod to normal is it possible? Do I need to reupload my songs. Does it significantly drain ipod life? Any viruses?
Thank you in advance.

Well, it adds it as a second boot O/S. Basically, when you reboot your iPod, you can either boot directly into Apple, or, hold the rewind and go into Linux.

Adding Linux doesn't touch your current configuration. Also, if anything REALLY screws up, just reload the apple firmware and re-sync. I install linux in less then 10 minutes.

There is more games etc, and the menu system is a little different. Getting MP3's to play properly is a bit of a hassle, but, it's neat to play new games :D

Not to mention, you can adjust your button sensativity etc. Linux doesn't work on 4th gen.

Pong, tetris and a couple others.. It's really easy. Go to google, look up "Linux on iPod".

You can download an updater. It's about as easy as updating your firmware.

Atm, it has Pong, Tetris, Minesweeper, and Othello atm

The windows installer that it has is VERY easy to use. And once you have Linux, just hold down prev to load Linux rather than Apple ;)

It also has voice recording, working perfectly atm for 3rd gen, but that uses some extra copying files etc. The voice record on Linux is 44.1 khz so it's a LOT better than the Apple one, and the Linux one doesn't use any accessories ;) Just records through earphones, or put a mic in!

Does this download directly to ipod or do you have to download it to the computer first?

I just installed it! What a neat idea... well done..

Word of advice, if you decide to install it don't select "Browse" from the menu, it'll crash.. like I just did even after reading the warning.. haha..

The menu system is much more responsive than the apple one.. very quick.. apple should learn from these guys.. if they bothered to care that is.

Playing Pong on my iPod! What a hoot... :D

Very cool! :)

Oh, then I can't help.. I'm using a PC right now and I used the installer.. they have instructions for the Mac installation, it requires using the Terminal.. it looks a little complicated..

Joshdude
09-17-2004, 01:16 AM
Yeah I'm basically Terminal illiterate. Oh well, a problem for another day.

kloan
09-17-2004, 01:40 AM
Well, it's basically just reading the instructions very carefully to know why you're typing the commands you are.. then it's pretty much just a matter of typing in each command and hitting enter as per the instructions.. if I had a mac, well I do, but it's a crappy iMac G3 400 and I hate working on it, so I won't try it... but if I had that Powerbook I've been dreaming about for years I could go through it and post my results and try to help out...

Anyone wanna buy me a Powerbook? ;) :D

You can download the PC installer here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipodlinuxinst

It's called "ipodlinux-installer" version 1.1

Clicking "Browse" was on the iPod.. there are too many songs for it to display to it just crashes.. better to use the other menu items...

EvilDude

Right now, iPodLinux is limited to developers/ pro computer users. It rewuires some knowledge of Linux as well, even for the windows installer, as you need to use Linux Commands in a start script file to copy new files that support newer features.

The voice recording feature is in extras but the one that works perfectly requires updating the kernel files etc (too hard to explain how to do that)

I think that with time iPodLinux will become useable.

BECAUSE IT'S NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 4TH GEN iPODS.

whats the required amount of free memory needed?
(My 3rd Gen 20 gig is basically full)

Also, i read the menu options react faster. This probably means the disc spins more (or more often); does this mean this wastes drains battery life faster?

kloan

Can't say how much space is needed... but as far as the menu reacting faster, I think is just because it's coded more efficiently.. I don't think it has anything to do with the hd spinning faster or more constantly..
