After searching this forum for a solution to the inevitable scratches my iPod had amassed, I came across a product called "iCleaner", which seemed to be fairly effective, per user comments and reviews. My 3g iPod is a little over a year old, but I've taken extreme care of it, always keeping it in a leather case when possible. However, despite my best efforts, I still managed to get a few scratches on the back and one on the wheel. So I ordered some iCleaner in hopes of taking care of them and keeping my iPod in pristine condition. Following the directions included and using the cloth provided (I even put on the rubber glove), I went to work on the back.

To my dismay, my iPod has never looked worse. Instead of the 2 or 3 unsightly scratches I began with, it is now COVERED in swirl-marks. Now, I'm no stranger to polishing things (I do automotive detailing), so I can only assume it's the product itself, and not my method of application.

To top it off, the front of my iPod now has a greenish tint to it. I'm uncertain if that is the results of the product or the cloth.

I'm going to try the product again today, but instead of using the included cloth, I'm going to use my own microfiber cloths that I use on cars. Hopefully, the end results will be better than what I've got now!

You may want to swing by the 'Definitive scratches' thread, but my guesses (having never used iCleaner) are:

1. Everything is going OK, but you need to continue with successively lighter passes to buff out the swirls, and/or use a softer cloth.

2. iCleaner MAY be too aggressive of a grit for your technique. You MAY be using too much pressure, too repeated of a pattern, or too scratchy of a cloth. The tough steel back, I think, combined with the soft plastic front makes for a real polishing headache.

Every attempt to use this product has resulted in even more swirls than before. My iPod now looks worse than it ever would have had I never attempted using iCleaner. I've followed the directions verbatim, several times, but to no avail.

My next step may be to take my iPod to a jeweler and see if they can attempt to buff out the swirls this product has produced. I may also seek a refund from the company, but I don't expect one.

note: I am not in the habit of bad-mouthing a company or product. I do not expect products to work flawlessly or to satisfy me 100%. But in this particular case, the product is doing more harm than good, which is why I wanted to bring it to attention!

After e-mailing the company, they had me answer a series of questions regarding the technique I used. They've surmised that the cloth they sent may not have been clean, and could have caused the swirls. They're sending me one of their ultra-microfiber buffing cloths free of charge in an attempt to rectify the situation.

Any other updates? I'm planning to use this product soon (when it arrives) and I'm looking at every single thread on it. Let me know how it went and the outcome.
