Details:
Brand new 4G 20GB Ipod.
Itunes latest version
Ipod software updated to last version.
Windows Xp updated.
USB 2.0
Every time I want to mount it in itunes I need to restore it and intall everything again.
If I don't do so, it just appears as another hard-disk.
Why does it only work after just restoring it?
Second time I plug it, nothing happens with itunes and keeps telling do not disconect and a circle on the top left corner.
there is not a definitive solution?
If not, I will go for a refund.

Welcome to the lounge. Take the iPod and return it. You should not have to restore the iPod every time you want to connect it. There's a problem with that iPod you have.

if it appears as a hardrive in my computer, you can use anapod or vpod to xfer music to it. make sure u set itunes to allow it to be a hardrive (i think its something like it, i dont have an ipod yet)

I had the samer problem of my ipod not mounting. Check my post on The "Ipod not mounting sticky". Its not the ipods fault. Its your USB drives. They are incompatible with Ipod. CHeck my post for information on what PCI USB cards are compatible with the ipod. Also it fixed my problem.

but then what do you do, when working from a notebook computer?!
the problem i have is exactly the same as chaser's! it will usually only work directly after a reset/reformat. if i'm really lucky everything will work 2-3 times after that. but then; all of a sudden the ipod will not be correctly identified by my system until i format it once more...

Why not just buy a firewire PC (PCMCIA) card for your laptop?
Here's one for $18.00 plus shipping - http://awedeals.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1797&osCsid=1f15cfd45b34f693865189c33f24456a

if i was certain that it worked, fine. however, i live in germany. cash refunds are not common / only possible in rare cases...

I understand. But remember that iPod was originally developed for FireWire...and it seems that many people have more problems with USB than with FireWire. What i'm saying is, unless your iPod is defective, it will work with firewire (or unless the PC card you get is defective)
You may want to consider trying it on a computer with firewire before making your decision.

What strikes me most is that it appears as a hard disk in My Computer, it should NOT do that by default, usually you have to turn the option on from itunes when it detects it.
I am using a usb 2.0 PCI card, i got the cheapest i found and it works fine, in the beginning it wouldnt transfer at full speed (windows kept saying "uve connected a hispeed device to a low speed plug") all i had to do was download the latest drivers. Try that. If it still doesnt work, try it on someone ele's PC, be it usb 1.1 or 2.0, if it doesnt work then... GIVE IT BACK, EU consumers have some basic rights, they do exist, just have to make your case, if not threaten to sue them and create a fuss over it. If you bought it from a big department store they usually take it back quite quick.

@MBHockey:
ok. but there i still have 2 options:
a) get a 4pin-to-6pin adapter (because i have a 4pin firewire in my notebook)
b) get the PCMCIA card.
if b) are there any proven PCMCIA cards that work with the ipod? cause if i'm gonna invest another 20-40 ??? i would hope that it works. like i said: no cash refund! refunds of course do work but then only in exchange for something else...
the only list i found @apple was for regular PC cards: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93405
bit still: using USB 2.0 i still find it strange, that it works the first time(s)...

Since I'm not a computer person or even very knowledgeable in the USB/Firewire issue, I tend to stay out of these conversations. However, isn't it weird that the iPod doesn't work and then telling someone before they take the piece of crap back, to spend money on something else? True, iPods may have been formulated for the firewire/Mac in the first place, but they made it compatible with PCs. There should be no reason, according to Apple, why someone would have to go out and buy a Firewire card.
My 2.45 cents....

I would re-install the iPod software while the iPod is connected. Don't spend the money on a new card unless Apple tells you to do so.

In my case spending 50 dollars USD was very little for a USB card. I got my Ipod for free from my filthy rich grandmother.
One more thing. Either you buy the PCI USB or Firewire card to try it(you can return it if u buy it from best buy or circuit city) or just return the ipod itself. Cause the next one it not gonna work either(i exchanged 2 ipods with the same problem). So if your not investing any money you might as well get a oversized iRiver.
Also please take your time to call applecare. apple store genius bars are no good. The wait time was at its peak and its only a measly 10 minutes.

I can't believe (again) how easily you recommend people to buy new cards. Can't you just admit that there are lots of failures using windows+ipod? Just look at this forum!
Ipod is a 319 Euros gadget "compatible" with PC/Window xp/USB2.0 bla bla bla. No way I'm spending more money just to make it work.
It is not my problem or my PC's problem (any other USB device works fine). It is just Apple's problem. So I have got my money back.
They have a lost an Ipod/itunes user and a potencial Mac user.
Anyway thank you for those who tried helping me.

Yeah you have a good point, but i would have shelled out the extra $18 for a firewire card since it's such a good device -- i mean, you spent how much on it already, either $300 or $400 (heh, the $18 is less than the tax on your iPod)
