Hi,

I've looked into some related areas regrding this issue of saving text files to the iPod in Windows XP but I'm still no clearer.

I realise that you have to enable the iPod for disc use and that it involves some sort of dragging but this is what I want to be clear about.

1. Can create my own text files, say, short stories, jokes, whatever into Microsoft word then save this to the ipod? Will it be a case of highlighting my given file/document then Right Clicking on Send To and send the file to the external-removalable drive number, as you might with a CD?

2. I understand that the format has to be a .txt. Under the available formats in Microsoft word under file there doesn't seem to be a format for this. Would Rich Text Format be appropriate?

3. What might be my word or character limit? Would I then have access to this in the note section?

4. Once I am eventually able to do the above how would I go about deleting or replacing the files on the iPod?

I've looked into the folders on the iPod in windows explorer but it doesn't go into any detail as far as I'm aware or tells me what exactley I should do in steps. I realise the apple website has some pointers but it assumes that people like me automatically know everything.

So far, my iPod and I are having a beautiful experience together and I would like to get the full benefit of the iPods capabilities.

Any other decent software and programmes to upgrade my pod further, other than the ones mentioned in the software section. i tried downloading Googlenet and iStory creator but I had problems transforming them to the pod, despite having downloaded everything necessary.

Anyway, thank you for reading this post. I would appreciate any help you can give. I've only had the iPod for a couple of days. Be gentle:)

Check out iPod Agent for importing text files.

To do it manually, you want plain text files. Easiest way to get these on Windows is to use Notepad. There is a 4k limit to text files on the iPod. Anything larger than that will be truncated when displayed on the iPod.

As for where they go, you can place the text files anywhere under the Notes folder on your iPod. You can create subfolders under the Notes folder if you want and these subfolders will be navigatable (is that a word?) from the iPod.

For advanced features, read this guide (http://developer.apple.com/hardware/ipod/ipodnotereader.pdf).

I'll try that, although the advanced guide I read went over my head.

As for iPod agent, i tried downloading the story creation programme but I wasn't able to install it properly, and there were no clear links for the fixes or additional software I would need.

ipodlibrary.com seemed like it was only compatable with Mac.

I think if you save your file as "yourfile.txt" by typing your filename with the quotations it forces it to save as a text file or whatever file you want.

OK, as Shadow said above, the easiest way to create .txt files is to use Notepad instead of Microsoft Word. To open Notepad click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Do your typing, then save the file. Next, connect your ipod, and (assuming disk mode is enabled) open My Computer and double click on the ipod drive. Then open the Notes folder. Then locate the saved txt file in your Docments, and copy and paste it into the ipod's Notes folder.
PS Ipodlibrary does work on Windows XP http://www25.brinkster.com/carmagt/SharePod/

Thanks very much. I'll try it out.
