YO,
so i just got the altec lansing speakers for the mini yesterday. these things are real cool, so i'l give a quick review.
Sound-It's pretty good. Coming from two speakers you obviously can't get an encompassing feeling, but the sound is up to par with my "Cambridge Soundworks" speakers on my computer, probably a little better. The bass is pretty good, and carries far. So, these speakers are definately enough to 'tie you over' but don't buy if you want to be completely blown away (in which case you'd havve to pprobably spend a grand on home theatre speakers)
Casing-Looks to be pretty damn solid. The ipod fits in real nice. It has silver sides (match the ipod mini in silver) and white everywhere else. Also comes with a cover that can snap on and off to protect your speakers. No complaints here, definately well thought out.
Extras-There's quite a few things that altec did to make this even better. One of them is that the speakers now have a silver protection screen over the speakers, so they don't get dinged up or dirty. It looks great and functions well. Next thing is how the ipod actually sits on this thing. It's back of the mini sits about 2 mm away from the face of the speakers, which is nice. The top of the mini sticks out maybe 1/4 of an inch, which is something i never thought about before in pictures. But after looking at it, it makes it seems as if the mini is a tower and looks cooler :) The dock for the mini folds out with the click of a button. Now for the base of it: It's different from the bigger brother i believe. This one just has (when you click the button for the dock to fold out) a rear end piece that folds out as well and locks into place via a little tab. this means that the thing isn't going to be stable if somebody tries to knock the mini onto it's face (not that that will happen) but it supports great going the other way. the back end piece is thought out well in how it supports, but it's a bit hard to explain through words.
Functionality-THere's 2 buttons on this thing pretty much. Volume, and the on / off switch. The on on switch is, well....easy? It's just like anything else. The volume switch is just a tab that slides back and forth. easy. keep in mind that the mini's volume doesn't matter (if you scroll the wheel) it's completely controlled by the speakers.
Notes-This thing is real cool. I have it playing while i'm on my computer (it's pluged into the wall) and have it set to sleep mode before i go to sleep, it even wakes me up in the morning to my favorite tunes (WITHOUT the hassle of tossing and turning in bed with your headphones getting in the way). Plugged into the wall it charges the ipod (OR can sync up to your computer just like the USB 2.0 cord, so it's like a dock). Also, that foldout stand that supports it? Underneath that are all of the connections for usb/firewire or a lineout (for a stereo) etc.
Volume: I have it set on maybe 20% when listening from 2 feet away inside. I don't exactly like LOUD music, but this thing can do just that, be loud. If i turn up the volume to loudest, it'll probably be good for say, putting it at the middle of a tennis court whilst two people are playing, in an outdoor setting, whil the people can hear everything just fine. However, if you turn it up loud there will be crackling noises (from IPOD songs, NOT from speakers. what happens is that the low quality songs have bits taken out, and that shows on higher volumes).
MY ONLY complaint is the cord connector in the back. It doesn't 'click' in, it just sits there. This means you can pull it out easily (unlike the mini where you need to press the side buttons to get out the cord). I think mine may havve a defect in this area, but it doesn't really bother me.
Grade?-10/10. these things are great in every way. buy NOW!
