Since I like stories about people and their new iPods, I was wondering if there were any receivers of the free iPods at Duke University, for this years incoming Freshman Class?

I must say I'm a bit jealous of these kids but I'd still like to hear from them, and hear about their experience starting a new school, and their feelings about their iPods. Are they kept by most students, or are there cheap iPods to be found on campus? Please give us the scoop.

I don't see how it's free, though it might be free in a sense i'm sure the freshman had an increase in tutition that covered the cost of those units.

if a kid can afford to go to duke in the first place an ipod probably isnt that big of a deal.

I was really expecting some students to find their way to iPodlounge. Maybe their all pawning them or keeping just 2 CDs on them.

it seems to me that duke students/any other ipod user who has an ipod simply handed to them aren't the type to join the ipodlounge and look into the ipod past its condition as a status symbol.

The Chronicle online (http://www.chronicle.duke.edu/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/02/28/42230159a01ba)

"Critics ask: Have students used them for educational purposes? Did teachers find innovative ways to integrate this technology into their curricula? Was it worth the $500,000?"

Interesting reading.....

Having a portable 20gig HD could be a plus for students.. even if they don't listen to music on them..

Why would they not open them? I wish I got a free iPod to record classes with. It would make revision very easy.

iPod would not even be best for all these purposes though would it? I mean. from what I gather recording capabilities are not leading (Compared to iRiver), and you need 3rd party product.

Be honest with yourselves, how many students, if given a free iPod, would actually use it for their studies.

Honestly. Really. Any hands? No? Right you are.

I would have liked to have one for the language courses... never really liked to relisten to lectures; we taped some of our larger pre-med lectures and streamed them online which was great for everyone who took those classes. I think that having them will encourage a lot of students to use them well, and if they don't well their loss. they're paying for them one way or other.

at least 2 years? jeez, i wish i had a chance of paying off my student loans in only 2. i didn't even take any out for my undergrad degree, but this graduate degree is going to take forever to pay off. but then again, i'm only going to be a professor at the end of it all... not some well paying job like a typical Duke grad would get...
