1G Ipod, !/folder icon

I've seen a lot of suggestions regarding the !/folder icon and reset. Unfortunately, when I reset it, I still get the icon, then it shuts down within seconds. Tried plugging it into an AC outlet, same result. I tried system restore, but the computer does not recognize the Ipod.

Is there some sort of a hard reset or is my 1G Ipod toast? I'd hate to send it in, get a bill for a few hundred $, when I could have just bought a 4G.

It's probably a dead HD. You can search for a good HD for cheap [eBay?] or just call it dead and upgrade.
