So what i would like to do is write a script that encodes and AIFF file into MP3 using itunes but without the new mp3 being automatically moved into the itunes music folder. is there a way to supply itunes a path for encoded files, or would i just have to add a post-encoding handler to move the file after itunes was through? i made sure the 'copy files to itunes music folder' checkbox was not selected under itunes preferences, but the behavior persists. any suggestions?
thanks

You could easily modify this script: Rip This Where I Want It (http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/scripts02.shtml#ripthiswhereiwantit) rips the selected tracks from a CD with iTunes (using an on-the-fly selected encoder; your Preferences-selected encoder is restored after running the script) and places the resulting ripped file(s) into a folder located wherever you designate.
Though files are added to iTunes as part of the ripping process they are subsequently removed from the Library (and removed from the Music folder under OS X).

Have you considered creating a new user, and ripping your CDs while logged in there? I rip to AIFF, then batch-endode to AAC using AAChoo, then retag, so I do that all under a different user login. That way, it doesn't mess up my Library. Just make sure to save to a public folder.
