This is probably a very simple question, but I just got my iPod tonight, I'm excited and want to make sure I'm going it right.

I have a PC and after installing everything and restarting it said it had to format the iPod for PC.

How long does this take? It brings up a window where "Update" isn't highlighted (just Restore), so I'm guessing it is already going the update or am I missing something?

I just didn't want to waste my time if it is already formatted (its only been 5-10 minutes).

Thanks.

All iPod's save those from HP. Come into this World as Mac iPod's. So if you're on Windows (As you are!), then you need to either a) Run the cd version of the 'Update & Restore' or Download the Same albeit an updated version from Apple.

Execute that Program run the 'Restore' button it'll Format and install the current iPod OS (for which ever iPod you have),. You [i]might have to disconnect you iPod (from the System Tray - By the Clock!) in order to finnish the Install. On the whole it should only take a minute or Two. At which point it'll Call up iTunes to start Porting whatever Music (if any), you have to the ipod...

Let's see if I'm doing this write.

The iPod Updater comes up ... I hit Updated and then the button comes up to Restore.

I hit restore but then it says "Formatting Failure, Disk Write Error."

Did I do something wrong?

OK,

I got it to work finally after plugging it into my 1.1 USB drive. Maybe there is something wrong with the 2.0 card I installed last night. But then I had to leave and come to work.

Now that it is formatted, I should just be able to plug it in and ITunes will open automatically? Is that correct?

I tried that quickly this morning but it didn't work.

Do I need to turn the computer on, then plug in the iPod ... or can it already be plugged in when I turn the computer on?

Thanks.

AFAIK it shouldn't say anything. You need to connect the iPod Preferbly via FireWire 400, but USB2.0 should work too.
To your PC at which point you should see a 'DO NOT REMOVE' (Prohibit Sign). on the iPod Screen. At this point you can start up the Update and Restore 06.08.2004 (Downoad from Apple).
Press the 'Restore' Button and you should see a Progress Bar on your Computer. When this is done, your iPod should eject itself from the Computer. If it does not there should be an Applet in the System Tray (Next to the Clock / lower right), to force eject the iPod from the Computer. It's not a good idea to disconnect the iPod unless it (the iPod), gives you the all clear to do so. When you see the Checkmark it's Ok to disconnect.

Now the iPod should normaly reboot at this time, then show you this picture of the Dock Cable and an Arrow. Note if you do not use FireWire 400, but rather USB you need to use the AC Power block a.k.a Brick to finnish off the install. A new Progress Bar will come up this time on the iPod. When it finishes you'll be done. The iPod is now ready to transfer data using Windows.

At least that's what it should do...

But to try and adress your problem better can you get passed the Apple Logo? or does your iPod end up showing you some other Icon Sad iPod or a Folder+!? Or does it just freeze at the Apple logo? I would recomend trying this (Just for the hell of it!).

Press 'Menu' & 'Play / Pause' When you see the Apple logo press 'RW /Prev', 'Menu' & 'Select / Action' (i.e. The center Button).
This will set the iPod into ScanDisc Mode If you ever used Win9x before I think you'll know what the basic premise of this is. If not it's a diagnostic test to check the health of your iPod HDD.

X - means HDD Faild (Call Apple)
- - means ScanDisc was interrupted
Checkmark - Means HDD Passed

Note: ScanDisc takes a while to preform so use the AC Addapter when doing this or take the chance that the Batterie will hold out that long! Nothing drains a Batterie more the the Backlight and constant HDD access...

All of that ended up working this morning. After plugging it into my regular USB port, I hit restore, it actually went through the process and then told me to put it on the Dock to finish the process.

I did all of that, that is when I had to leave for work. So it should now be formatted for my PC.

The iPod lets me go through the menu's etc., I just need to know what I need to do to get it to transfer the music.

So long as you saw the Progress Bar compleate on the iPod itself it sould be ready to go with iTunes.
