Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hello all.

I have a older Gateway Pentium III computer with Windows ME. I dont have firewire and I'm unsure about USB.

I am pretty stupid when it comes to computer hardware and I would really appreciate some help.

I'm looking to buy a 4g 20GB or 40GB iPod and I'm wondering how I can get it to work properly with my computer.

I would like to also use iTunes if possible.

Will everything/anything work with Windows ME without firewire? Would I HAVE to upgrade to XP? Do I NEED to buy a firewire? If I purchased the 4g 20GB iPod withought a dock would i need to buy one?

If you need more info to answer questions please tell me. I'm really desperate for answers, anything would be appreciated.

I'd suggest upgrading to XP simply because then iTunes for Windows would work on your computer. Also, I'd be using USB cables with a PC. I've got a PC and a Mac, and I always use USB cables with the PC.

You wouldn't *need* to purchase the dock with the 20GB. The ipod will still charge via USB cables.

Hope this helps.

So, iTunes for Windows will not work without XP?

..and is the "normal" USB connection the only one I need? I'm not sure what kind I have or anything like that...

You'll be up the creek without USB 2.0

I just got a new iPod. A few weeks ago I had to buy a USB 2.0 card so I could use a new printer on this old pIII machine. It transfers music at about 1 song per second, or faster, and its real nice with USB2. I think the card cost me about 25 bucks. The cheapest I've seen em were 19...

Go to the apple site to check if iTunes works with ME... It works for me on Windows 2000 Pro.

Cheers

iTunes - no way you have to have XP or 2K
Firewire - it's optional, USB will work just fine
Dock - you actually do not need it unless you need line out to connect to your home stereo
Me - you can use it without problem, however no iTunes
