have to be fully charged in order to use the firewire, for downloading music?? I have the Belkin firewire card for my laptop, and I can never get it to download, I get no responce from my pod (named wulf)

I always end up using the usb port, which has been doing pretty good so far.

If you are using a 4 pin firewire port, then yes it needs to be fully charged. The 4 pin port does not charge the iPod when it is connected.

If you have a 4 pin firewire port you will need a 4 to 6 pin adapter to connect your pod.

I have a 4 pin firewire. When I first installed my 4g Ipod it wasn't being recognized...because I didn't have any files on it I tried a restore and after that it worked fine. One thing I have noticed is that it takes a bit to get started (when transferring files) but it seems to go faster if the Ipod is turned on. Sorry I can't be any more helpful!

tell u what I will give it one more chance over the weekend I have some songs I wish to download, if it works great if not I will just continue using usb port.

over the weekend, I slid in the firewire port for my laptop, and made sure my pod was fully charged, and it worked!!!

download was fast!,

but does it have to be fully charged? or 1/2 charged that is the main question?

I am about to pickup my 1st iPod. 20gb 3rd gen! Yay for me!

Question: Can I charge the ipod thru the dock while it is connected to a stereo and away from my computer. IE can the charger (AC adapter) connect to the dock or can it only be plugged directly into the iPod?

Yes, the connection on the back of the dock is exactly the same as the connection on the bottom of the iPod so you can charge the iPod while it's sitting in the dock and connected to either the AC Adaptor.
