View Full Version : Is a case REALLY necessary?

I've been going round and round looking at different cases, but due to the fact I'm in serious debt just from buying the actual iPod, ??20+ is seeming like a lot of money on top of the ??299 I already don't have, plus the fact I've no idea which one to get anyway, so I was wondering, do you really need a case?
I've been used to chucking my MD in my pocket wherever I go and never worried about it, and was intending on doing the same when I get my iPod, but all the scratch threads made me think twice..
As long as I make sure there's nothing else in the same pocket it should be ok shouldn't it?

You should be okay, most of the time. If that's you're reasoning you've probably no insurance also. You have it for the one instant that you'll need it. Of course you can take the risk, but being in debt, why would you gamble with your expensive Ipod. You'll sure can't afford another one of those.

Sorry to post this twice but I got lost and posted it in the iPod Mini area by mistake (so many forums, such confusion..)

Thanks for the reply - I'm only in debt to my parents, but no, I couldn't afford another one.
I'm more enquiring as to whether it'll get scratched being naked in my pocket, as opposed to dropping it as i don't plan on doing that..
Insurance, what's that?! :P
I got lost and posted this in here as opposed to the non-mini forum, so I re-did it there, sorry!

It depends on how you feel about a very expensive player that you are already "in serious debt". Do you want your investment to get seriously scratched from being in your pocket? Do you carry keys and change? Some of the things you might want to consider.
Paying an extra 20 for lifetime protection is basically a pretty good investment. Not all the protective cases are expensive. Check out the reviews...or just use a sock *smile*
Hope this helps!

No - you don't NEED a case, so long as you can live with scratches and blemishes (e.g. you put your iPod in your pocket - which also happens to contain loose coins - result = blemish.) Mr. Murphy will come knocking at some point, maybe later than sooner - but he'll strike.
If it were mine and it was caseless (and I valued keeping it in decent aesthetic condition) I'd find something around the house to protect it (e.g. well washed gym sock, old Crown Royal purple bag, etc.)

But what I'm trying to get at (albeit in a round-a-bout way) is will it get scratched just from being in my pocket?
I never carry loose keys/change/rocks so that isn't a problem, it would be all on it's own.
But from the response I'm probably going to get the Ebony iSkin Evo2, just seems a shame to keep it in a case all the time when it looks so good..
Thanks :)

It WILL get scratched in your pocket, unless you wear silk of soft cotton, trust me.

Hey Fowler! (merged your double thread)
Ms. Jewelle is NOT qualified to answer this question - she has several thousand ipod cases at her disposal - all in the more expensive range :):):)

IMHO yes I mean the whole point for me was so to prevent me or others from manhandleing the Chrome back with grubby Finger Prints! That need to be whiped down all the time which can eventualy lead to Hairline Scratches! Ok SO I'M VAIN!! SUE ME!!
Another point about those Rubber suits (Speck, Vaja, or iSkin Evo) is that it'll protect the Corners from getting dinged up if you're happles to let the thing fall on the Street. Shame that the LCD Face is unprotected though!
Do you need a Case? Well Scratches are inevitable! So there's not much point to argue there. Only the number and severity will differ. But, can you put a Price on the Piece of Mind that will only come when your Baby is safely wraped up in a Cover? You are most likely gonna drop more Money into this thing before it's over. Cases, Docks, Cables and Headphones. I can tell you now the those In-Ear Jobs and the Dock are gona set you back about ???80.00(EUR) alone. So I wouldn't freak out over a ???15.00(EUR) Rubber iPod Skin. just make sure you get the correct size cover. The 10, 15 & 20Gb are smaller then the 30 and 40Gb Models so although a 10~20Gb iPod will fit inside a 30~40Gb Case it will not be very tight and the iPod may start to slip out of the cover! Thankfuly once you close the flap the iPod stays still.
I'm curently have a small bit of Tissue Paper tucked up betewwn the Case and the back of the iPod. That did the Trick now my iPod stays still in it's case when I go to Charge it or update my Playlists!

if your worried about scratches, and u cant afford a case, invest in the pod shields which will protect ur screen and chrome www.trendygeek.com
They are inexpensive and i think this will solve all ur problems especially your wallet.

Thanks for sorting out my ####-up ginalee! Just look like I'm talking to myself now though..!
I've ordered the 4G 40GB so I've got nothing else to buy hopefully.
Now, the main reason for buying it is to listen to music, obviously, and it'll spend most of it's time in my pocket, but the fact it looks so sleek is a huge bonus - It just feels like putting it in a case (especially the iSkin which I assume isn't intended for being put in and out of regularly) means that I'll never actually see it in it's naked glory, all for the sake of protecting it from scratches, when you'll not actually be seeing it anyway..
At the end of the day as long as it plays my music I'll be more than happy, but I need something to pass the time before it's delivered (why, oh why didn't I go down the road and get one from PC World?!)
Thanks for all the replies :)

Thanks Mac Brat, I had seen them on my searches but had forgotten about 'em - just ordered 1, only ??10 delivered to the UK so can't go too wrong, and I'll still be able to enjoy the gorgeous whiteness!
Nice one :)
