I wanted to get around the whole "mounting" thing in the car. What I really wanted was to have a dock in my car to which I could just plug my ipod in and go. The only problem is that I really like my Contour showcase. Really. I like it so much that I didn't want to take my ipod out of it while in the car to listen to tunes. So I went to work, and fashioned a dock out of epoxy putty in the cupholder. I wrapped my ipod in saran wrap and moulded it around it. I used the SIK imp for the dock cable. I opened up the dock end of the cable and snipped off the little clips that hold it securely in the ipod's docking port, and mounted the end of the imp in the dock I made. I wired a second cigarette lighter behind the dash, and ran the line out to the AUX input in my Blaupunkt Cd player. Vo??la. I have a dock that I can use without taking my ipod out of the case, and it gives me line-out performance and charges my ipod at the same time. The only downside is that I'm short a cupholder.

Here's a pic of what it looks like from the bottom of the cupholder. It looks rough, I know, but who cares? Who will ever see the underside of my cupholder anyways? Oh, this install was done on a '98 Escort.

that is awesome. so creative. can that be taken out of the cup holder or is the putty stuck in there? and it looks like you painted to the top or what?
