Ive connected mine up using the dock which has the stereo jack output on the back - this ive found also gives a better (louder and cleaner!!) output than connecting it from the normal headphone output.
I bought a 3.5mm to stereo RCA connector which then plugs into the aux input of my home amp.
Sounds very nice.
You might need to play about with the EQ settings on the ipod as I found out that the bass is slightly distorted - the best one ive found to use is the classical setting.

Use the lineout on the dock or get a pocket dock with line out.

Then get a 18" mini jack to RCA cable. http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=42-2550
This will give the reciver the same signal as a vcr, dvd player, or cd player. If you use the headphone jack on top of ipod you are sending an amplified signal to the reciver and you might damage it.

^^^ i used that same mini jack to RCA cable to hook up my ipod to my friend's 15+ year old, P.O.S. stereo system. he was surprised that it actually worked as an auxilliary component, and i was surprised that it sounded half-decent.
for about $5 you have some great versatility.
