Firmware Docs?

It's now common knowledge that you can access an iPod from applications using just a formatted, disk-usage-enabled iPod and a USB2 hookup, no problems. But, I want to do a little bit more. Does anyone have any info on the nature of the firmware in an iPod? Specifically, I'm looking for 4th generation firmware copies right now...I know this is just a tiny bit wierd, but yeah...

Do you mean the firmware itself or docs about firmware?

There are no real docs about the iPod firmware...

I'm looking for any information whatsoever about how iPods run internally...a copy of the firmware would be nice too...the problem is that my good Linux box died last month before my iPod came, and now I can't dissect it using any good tools.
