Cassette Adapter Problem, please help.

I bought a cassette adapter for my car today from Radioshack. It works fine in my home stereo, but in my car the music only comes out of the right side speakers. This is with the balance in the middle too. When the radio is on, it plays from both sides, but not when the cassette adapter is in. I can move the balance a ways to the left and it sounds somewhat even, but the volume decreases a considerable amount. If anyone has any ideas as to what is wrong I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

1. Of the various adaptors out there, the Shack's is, sadly, one of the worst.

2. It sounds defective. Return it. Preferably for cash so you can hit Target or someplace and get the Sony, Belkin, or Monster unit.
