I used to have a pair of Grado SR60 before I purchased my iPod. But unfortunately they decided to leave me a few days before my 3G arrived. (Lost, Stolen, Jelous IDK)
I was planning to replace them with another pair, but I've also considered an upgrade to the Grado SR80's or the Alessandro MS1's. I only have one concern. Can the iPod alone power these sets of phones properly, or do they tax the machine too much?
I don't want to carry an amp, because I feel this kills some of the portability. So any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You:)
Check around the head-fi boards. Tons of threads relating to your question, if I remember (Haven't been there in a few weeks).

I didn't think these were "high end" enough to be a subject on audiophile boards. What sites do you recomend?

I have the SR80s and they're really the upper limit of what the iPod can power. I usually need to set my volume at 85-90%. So yes, the iPod can power them... but barely.

So would you say the SR60's are a better choice, or would they be as upper limit as the SR80's?

I can't say whether the SR-60 would be a better choice, as I've never heard them on an iPod. But these are plenty high enough to be discussed on audiophile boards. Search around for this topic over on head-fi... there will surely be tons of discussion about it.

Thank you for your help, I'll start looking for a Hi-Fi forum to search:)

I have SR80s. I bought them before I had my iPod.
I did not hear a big difference in sound between the 60s and 80s when testing. Base was a little better. Price wasn't much different so I went 80s.
When I tested 60s vs 80s with my Walkman, I felt both were driven quite well.
With my iPod it seems to work just as well. I run between 70% - 80% volume.

Thanks for your input. I'll check the hi-fi forum tonight, but do you think the 2 Grado's require the same amout of power to opperate? If they do I'll go for the better also.

I have the sr80's and they work perfect with the iPod. To solve the problem of needing to run them at 90% volume, I simply increased the volume of each of my songs in iTunes and synced them to my iPod. Since the songs are set louder, I only have to have my iPod set to 25% for a reasonable level and 50% for extremely loud. If I go as high as 75%, or a full 100%, it is way too loud for me ears.
To answer your question, the iPod can power sr80's just fine, all you have to do is increase the volume on the songs in iTunes and sync the volume change to your iPod.
