You think they can go another season unbeaten? That would be something very special!

I like Arsenal because I respect them!
But as far as it goes with them now equalling Nottingham Forests record of unbeaten games and the very likelyness of them beating it, i say this:
It is the English League and at least Forest, an English team, set that record with 10 English and 1 Irish player!
That is in no way a racist comment (I DESPISE racisits!) but I do feel that the influx of foreign players is ruining England as a national side!
Jackus
08-23-2004, 02:27 PM
I'm glad you respect arsenal. I sorta agree about the too many foreign player, but they have had an enormous impact on the game, like dennis bergkamp, zola, etc etc... I dunno what it would be like without foreign players.

Well I'm not English so I don't really follow them much. I am Italian and therefore I would naturally be inclined to like Italian Football :) Roma came to Toronto and played Celtic. That was awesome. My father and cousin went, but I still got to watch it on TV.. :)

I do not like Milano, but they do have a solid team. I think Roma may take it this year though. They have a great lineup with Cassano fresh off of a productive Euro 2004 where pretty much every other Italian in that tournament was a huge disappointment. It will be close one between Milano and Roma I think. As for Juventus I don't think they will be having a very good season. They may have Buffon, but he can only do so much. Del Piero hasn't been consistent since his injury and the team has been hurting a bit since they lost David's and his great tackling abilities.
It should be a great season. Should be fun.

He may turn out to be great and if so that's good for him, but I think its a bit too much of a gamble on him, but than again this is Manchester...I'm surprised Chelsea didn't buy him first though ;)
As far as I am concerned the player of the future is Antonio Cassano of Roma, very talented and skilled. Hopefully he will emerge from the mountain of overtalented, primadonna failures that is team Italia in Germany 2006.

funny though, most of the liverpool supporters don't think the same (judas) of owen for going to real.
anyway good luck to rooney - hope he does well, since it'll benefit the national team!
Provboy
09-03-2004, 11:14 AM
maybe because owen really wasn't performing well when he left, and they've had a lot of new signings. yes i agree with you that rooney will probably develop in man u, but the pressure might get to him, being in a big club and being focused on by the media all the time. and yeah, smith and rooney together will help the england team
Jackus
09-03-2004, 03:46 PM
Yea, in the end couldn't get any tickets to the psv game... :( Rooney... well... he played a few games for england against, well, lets admit it, not very good opponents, and scored a few times. I believe that it is much harder in the premiership, and, although I think he did need to leave everton to mak the most of his talent, it will not be easy for him to play like he did for england, and score as many goals. Premiership sides are more well moulded as a team, and play better together... Look at Henrys performance in the Euros, not that stunning. Then when you compare that with how he plays for arsenal, there is a BIG difference...
Anyway, I guess no one actually will understand what I am trying to get across here, but hey ho, worth a try ;)

i think the last time they lost was in the FA cup vs Manutd.
a lighter was thrown at the ref after he sent off mexes. he bled. after almost a 45 minute halftime, the ref abandoned the game. score was kiev 1 - 0 roma at the half.
uefa are investigating and the punishment could be:
no more roma games in rome and a 3-0 win for kiev
worst case is they get booted out of the champions league

That sounds a bit extreme. Never heard of anything that drastic since Yugoslavia got chased out of Euro '92 and that was because of UN sanctions...Roma fans are a nice lot aren't they? Didn't they spend a few games last season playing in Lazio's stadium after a similar accident concurred?

Yes, I wouldn't question that as they are basically beside each other in geographic terms in Italy...
Roma fanatics are a bunch of nuts at times. But than again in Canada there are the Toronto Maple Leaf fanatics as well... Team Canada just won the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto last Tuesday and the fans were jumping on taxis and flipping them over, waling hockey pucks at cops. Did anyone see Beckham's goal? Absolutely sensational, 35 yards out and he just swerves it past Jones...if he played week in week out like that for Real (as he has been recently), Real wouldn't be in that position now.
Notice that despite the amount of attacking talent Real possess in Raul, Ronaldo, Morientes, Zidane, Figo, Owen, etc, Becks has scored almost half of Real's goals in the Primera Liga.

Hmm...let's see. Have you ever won the Treble? :p Have you ever touched the European Cup come to think of it? :p
On a serious note though, Arsenal have been playing well for the last two seasons. United have admittedly been second or third to them. But we're in our rebuilding process, and we've got the best manager in the world to guide us unlike Liverpool.
Imagine what it's like when Ronaldo, Rooney, et el are in their roaring 20s and the likes of Campbell, Vieria and Robert "Cheating" Pires are in their 30s? :p

and stop saying things like treble or euro cup comeon it took fergie redface 9 years to get those things. arsenal might be just starting. they might win it, they might not, but it's too early to say those things. maybe when wenger retires and they still haven't won a euro title then that would be the right time to say "oh you never won the treble etcetc" :) am i right?

Benitez is new - and there's no way you can't say he's a bad manager. Just look at his track record. Its like saying Ferguson is naff (tempting :D ) because Man U have been underperforming this season. And as for the best manager... it is a certain Arsene "Comical" Wenger. I have the upmost respect for his style of management and the Arsenal team. Never was into watching other teams besides Liverpool play, but for sheer entertainment they are even better than the Man U team in the early/mid nineties. IMO of course :D
He's introducing a newer style of play and sculpting the team his way, which will take time. Which I am prepared to give him, although this new zonal marking is killing us at the moment. Stopping us doing the one thing we were good at doing (man marking) in the last couple of years is producing problems.... highlighted by the gaping holes created on Saturday to allow Fulham to score. Should never have happened, but its down to the confusion the new system has brought.
Whilst I'm all for giving the manager a go, I have a short fuse when it comes to players. Traore and Diao HAVE TO GO. Every time Traore got the ball on Saturday I was wincing because I knew he'd either put in a bad pass or loose posession entirely. Or fall over. And Diao has achieved nothing but obscurity every match. Thank god for Alonso, he should start every game. Can't wait until Gerard is back as our midfield is shaping up nicely.
All we need now is some consistent strikers. Hopefully Cisse will come good soon (like the faithful believe) but I'm not sure. Bring on January, and the possibility of Morientes coming over....

It's Kristiano :) United had this player, but in '96 or '97, he was discarded by Tottenham, came to United and in his thirties and last season at Man United, scored 19 goals that season to win us the Premier League and the Golden Boot. Has Dennis "I'm scared of flying" Bergkamp even won the boot before? If he's not even that of Teddy Sheringham, you want him to go against Keano today?
To Cesc, Robert "crashed the barrier and run" Van Persie and Reyes, we have Miller, Kleberson and C. Ronaldo. Can't wait to see the game today. Keane, Ruud and co. v. Vieria, Henry and co. should be VERY entertaining.

I think it's going to be very hard...I'll be honest, Arsenal are a very good team and Arsene Wenger is a technically brilliant manager, but the fact is the United have overcome greater deficits before (remember that season, Newcastle were 13 points clear with only a few games left to play).
Fergie is a great manager....And even if we don't win it this year, we definitely won't end up trophyless. Europe looks highly promising.

Bring on January, and the possibility of Morientes coming over....
the rafa knows what players are capable of and if he so chooses traore and diao, then he obviosuly feels that their defensive qualities are required, but i wonder sometimes...!?
as for morientes in january - in some ways that would be great as long as he played him, cisse and baros up front, but i think we have way too many forwards/attacking midfielders - we need to cover the two central defender positions (i think sami is no longer the force he used to be, and jamie is a great lfc sevant, but he's not exactly quick is he...!). imo every other position is covered, or rafa can change the formation to suit, so do we really need morientes?
looking forward to arsenal at anfield end nov, as hopefully the team will have started to shape up, and if the gooners are still unbeaten then, i reckon we have a good chance to end that run (as impressive as it is...!)

Sorry... BUT... what was the score last arsenal vs liverpool game? Yeah, the one at highbury... Yeah, the one where Henry scored a hatrick. Yeah - the one where he ran past all the liverpool defenders, leaving them on the ground, having been dummied... Yeah - thats the game :p
But seriously, I think Liverpool are going to be much more of a threat under Raphael Benitez... He's a good manager... Also, I hate to say it, but I like Jose Mourinho. He's really good, and pretty cool. In an interview about "stupid-mutu-who-took-crack-and-tested-positive" the press were meant to be asking him about the game ahead, but insteda the intrview was all about Mutu, and he siad something like: "Ask me the team for tommorows game. Go on, ask me the team for tommorows game." And then the reporter goes "Go on then, whats the team for tommorows game?" and he says (in a really sarcacstic criticising way) "It's too late." And walks off. That probably sounds NOT funny at all, but if you know the interview I mena, you'd know what I mean. So thats cool. Anyway, I'm going down to the pub with my dad to watch Man Yoo vs. Arsenal... We're cheap :p.... COME ON YOU GOONERS! WE ARE UNBEATABLE! :D

Thanks for being franks though Krist. Speaking of Christiano, Ronaldo is a diving wanker. And - lets be fair - was it a penalty? Should Rio have been on the field? Should Nistlerooy be on the pitch, even, after that stamp on Cole? No.
Its always comes down to the ref.

Cole did pull Ronnie down, it should have been another penalty...Admittedly, Rio should have been sent off, but Ruud? No...Vieria stamped on Ronnie late in the game, so all's square I suppose.

Right. So you say Rio should have been sent off, right? I think, that would only happen if the ref was in a neutral place, ie. not Old Trafford :) That was the dubious, was it a red card or not one. The Ruud one was obvious. Evryone who saw the TV replay says, the ref didn't see it, but quite clearly, Van Nistlerooy lifted up his foot, and stamped on cole. There WAS intent, and it WAS malicious. That was the definate red. Ah well, in these matches it always comes down to the ref. Shame we had a s**t one...

49 is pretty good...only United could beat that :p I can't wait to see Jose Mourinho get screwed...Chelski haven't been playing good football this season (apart from that recent 4-0 win) and with that Mutu scandal and all, I'd say they're more in risk of losing it than Man United.
Arsenalmad, I think yesterday's ref was a good one. I mean, if you look at it, he gave Man United some decisions (it was the Theatre of Dreams after all), but he didn't exactly rip Arsenal off that bad.
The reason Man United won yesterday was because they raised their game to a level I haven't seen in a long time (the last time they did that, I think was when we beat Madrid 4-3 in Europe early last year). There's all to play for with more than 25 matches left.

9 if you just count the English League. I think it's 12 if you count the Carling Cup and the Champions League...Not much I know, but I think we got around 4-5 draws in that process, which is definitely not United calibre. We should have beaten Birmingham, Portsmouth, etc.
But honestly, arsenalmad, don't you think Arsenal can't be considered as a truly great team until they win in the continent, and get a treble?
If you look at the great 4, Sir Matt, Sir Alex, Stein and Clough, all of them have domestic and continental success and I think until Arsene Wenger gets that, Arsenal simply can't be considered an incredible team regardless of how many 49-match unbeaten runs they go on :p
Provboy
10-31-2004, 10:47 AM
Arsenal are great because they went thru a whole season unbeaten. It's a different kind of "great" when a team wins a treble. So, yes, Arsenal are great, but not great enough in the continent - yet. We can't jump to conclusions until Arsene Wenger retires.
And that Cisse injury was NASTY. I saw something similar happen to Larsson years ago and, ouch, they never fail to make me cringe.

Finally you realise...I can't really get Roman Abramovich...It's exactly like the partnership between Real and the Madrid government.
It's not right...football shouldn't be like that. A real club can have money, but a poseur club that wouldn't even be in the top 5 without money simply doesn't deserve to be there.
Imagine Real without Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Beckham, Owen, Salgado and the likes and Chelski without Drogba, Kezman, Cech, Mendes, Bridge, Johnson, Makelele...It's simply not right and not in the best interests of football.

Mourinho you mean. I have no idea why they sacked Claudio, he was doing a good job, second in the league and in the semis of the European Cup.
We drew Man City today, goal-less too :( With Smithy sent off...A few more games like this, and I really think its over. I'm rarely this pessimistic with Man United, but like Ferguson said, we have to keep winning.

I hoped so! It was a bittersweet day I guess. I like Real and I always like to see Old Trafford alumnus such as Becks do well and I was a bit disappointed by the 3-0 defeat.
But on all other fronts, in the Premiership, I think there's all to play for and hopefully by New Year, United will be on the top of the table if not breathing on the necks of the Gunners and Chelski.

I came in thinking this was an American football thread. I have to get used to the fact that this site is international. I like soccer, oops, I meanfootball but I pay more attention to national teams than to local clubs. I know nothing about English clubs except that in my Playstation game FIFA 2001 Arsenal and Manchester United are the best teams in the game. Do you guys talk about anything international in this thread?

It's mainly EPL talk here since most of the Europeans that most here are from the UK. Occasionally when I am around Serie A (Italian top league) will be talked about. Its mainly club teams overall though.. When the 2006 World Cup qualifiers become more serious it will probably be talked about some more, but really until World Cup 2006 in Germany this thread will be all club football :)

I think the top club of South Africa is Santos or something like that right? The top clib of Europe has not been decided yet. It will be sometime in May, in Turkey.
The match you're talking about is the Intercontinental Cup and should take place sometime in August/September. It usually takes place in Tokyo or France I think.

C'mon arsenal! Lets how Liverpool. This is our first premiership game with Campbell back, so a decent defender at last... Now all our forwards are injured... Bergkamp: injured, Henry: Fitness Test yesterday, not sure how he did, Reyes: ditto for the fitness test. Van Persie: apparently should be fine, having gone off injured against psv. I like him. Well done to Man (ha ha ha, I just called them "Mac" city by accidnet... :p) City, beating aston villa, shaun wright phillips played well.

Wright-Phillips has talent, but he plays for the Blues, that effectively rules him out of ever becoming a class act ;D
I just read I think, that Thierry Henry's back. I hate that man, but admittedly, he's an absolute marvel to watch when on full fly. Liverpool are shackled by injuries too. Sinama-Pongolle & Mellor against Arsenal? Ruud and Wayne tried so hard the other time to score and they're class acts. I simply can't see Pool winning this realistically.
Although as a Manchester United fan, a 0-0 draw would be lovely! ;D

But now Spurs have 3 ex hammers, Portsmouth have more than their share and Man City have at least 2, my beloved irons seem to have relegated themselves to the "E" team.
Still, I can always look forward to an away game in Rotherham on a rainy Tuesday night in January...... *sigh* air goes all wobbly and TheDoctor starts dreaming of Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking, FA cup wins...............

It was, an awesome game.
Amazing first goal by Henry, shut up Mourinho about the second, and there should've been a third.
But you know what, I'm not too worried. Having seen that performance yesterday, that blew away anything else, IMHO, shown by ANY other team this season. If we can keep that belief going, we have it in us to do well in the League and Champions League.
Man Yoo now need to lose, keep that gap between the mighty Everton, us and Chelsea... :p

As I write this, its halftime from the Fulham-Manchester match and United are leading 1-0, Smudger scored. However, Keane hit the upright once and had a brilliant shot saved by Van Der Saar, Waz hit the post and Ronnie drove wide from about 5 yards.
We clearly dominated the first half. So Arsenal's lead over us look set to be cut to 1 point?

So far this year, Scholesy had 18 goals (You said year, not season). Robert Pires has 28 goals this year. And if you look at it this way, Pires has played at least 20 games more than Scholes because of Scholesy's injury at the start of the year and at the start of the season as compared to Pires.
And of course, not to forget the diver part. *Cough cough.

Yank Alert!
My case doesn't look that good on my mini either, so much so that I tend not to use it at all, just look after the mini like hell... Then I got some socks, and I like them, not just because on their own they look quite good (IMO, of course :)), also because when its in the sock it doesn't get scratched, which is what I'm trying to protect it from, I'm not stupid enough to drop it... :) So I use them now. On the price thing... I got mine from america, my aunt brought it over when she came over for the summer hols, and it came to ??13 because of the crap doller. You probably got overcharged a little aswell... A combo.
I do not currently have a Mac, but. by my no. of posts at iOnMac are deeply interested in them, and am eying up a PB 15". My sig needs o be updated, I decided I want a lappy, so I ruled out the iMac G5. So, I'm in the process of saving.. Early next year, my new best friend will join me... :p
Football... Chelsea playing Norwich today, and I'm sure we can both agree Huckerby and Bently (Arsenal, whey!) need to have an awesome game, and beat them or draw... Do a Man City, in other words.
I actually got round to watching the arsenal chelsea game on monday, and saw Hnery's goal (first). If you havn't seen it, Kristiano or other football fans, go watch it :) Awesome control, one touch and a lobby-volley shot, with power, and Czech was beaten.. The other one was quite comical, while still being legal, I stress... :o
The Champions League draw seems very interesting, Man Yoo are gonna be pushed to the wire by AC Milan, a draw which Sir Alex picked uncannily well. Not just saying this because I *hate* Man Yoo, but I don't think they will beat AC Milan. Maybe very close, but I don't think they will.
Chelski have a nasty clash with Barcelona, but, unlike Man Yoo, I think they can deal with Barca, and send they packing...
Arsenal's draw leaves me feeling dodgy again, this feels liek one that we can #### up with ease. We have the technical ability to beat Bayern, but whether we will pull it off on the day... Who knows.
Liverpool's luck appears to be holding out with a draw against Bayern Laverkusen, who are 8th in the Bunders league. I went to Arsenal vs. Bayern Leverkusen a couple of years, or maybe it was last year, ago, and they were not a bad team. But we easily beat them, 2-0. So they *should* qualify for the quarters which will be good for them, but thats as far as I see them going.
There we go, a nice long post for you, sorry to go on... :)
Thoughts anyone, if your brave enough... :p
