Are all cigarette plugs created equal?

I was just visiting the U.S. recently and while there I purchased a Belkin ipod charger. It worked fine in the the rental car there but...

Back here in Europe, it does not seem to work in my European-made Ford. It seems that the European cigarette lighter plug is a bit deeper.

Is this a European /U.S. issue or just a Ford issue?
