I got my iPod about 3 months ago (3g 15GB)
I listen to it nonstop for about a week, at 50% volume. Then suddenly I noticewhen i start it up that the left earphone is a lot softer than it was before. And when i increase the sound, it starts to crackle. So then I buy a similar pair of earbuds for 20 bucks. Again after about two weeks th e left earphone gets distictly softer than the right. Then in thinking that the earphone Im using are low quality, I spend $50 on a pair of in ear sony headphones. They work great, sound quality only second to the huge bulky ones I use on my bass amp. But again also after about 2 weeks, the left earphone blows out. Whats going on?
Am I using cheap earphones? Is the volume too high (50% usually)?

ye i have exactly the same problem and it's always the left ear phone.
first with the apple earphones which are bundled with the iPod, they lasted several months, then with the Apple IN-EAR ear phones, which lasted only 2 DAYS!
frankly im sick of it and i think apple need to pull their finger out in the ear phone department.
most people i know with sony in-ear's have had no problems, but screw apple i spent my $AU59 on their stupid in-ear pieces of junk they should last longer than 2 DAYS!
im ####ed off.......

If this has happened with multiple sets of earphones, I'm guessing it's not the earphones that are the problem. It sounds like, somehow, the iPod itself is killing the phones. If I were you, I'd try getting Apple to replace the iPod.

Try to concentrate on just removing the earbuds from your ears when you are done. What can often happen is that you yank them out of your years and tug on the cords that connect to the buds, and damage them. Try another pair, and be more careful with them when you remove the buds, and they might last longer.

Hope it helps.
