Hi all
I have been having a good look around for a 'car dock' to hold and charge my Ipod. I have seen these two which are the kind of thing I am after

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=ARKCM123
but wondered what other people use. I want something which is going to hold it firmly so when you push a button it does not just move away. I would really be grateful for any ideas / suggestions.
Just seen another one but I wonder if a magnetic holding an Ipod would have any negitive impact ???

Hey Tiggy,
I just bought one of these (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F008%5F001%5F011%5F002&product%5Fid=17%2D548) today at Radio Shack. I installed it a little bit ago, took like 15 minutes, mostly just figuring out exactly where I wanted it. It worked out pretty well. It's dark now so I don't have pictures but I'll take some tomorrow and post them.
My birthday is coming up and I'm expecting to get a Belkin Auto Kit so I'll have some wire control to do then.

I use the Pro Clip for my 4G 20Gig and I love it, works great. I also have the AUX-POD.

Ordinary household magnets have no effect on hard drives.

ProClip is what I have used. I used them for my 3rd Gen 10gb and now for my Mini.

I also use a profit mount to hold my proclip. I know the proclip works on the 4G 20Gig iPod, not sure about the 40Gig.

I put my brother's 4th Gen 20gb into my 3rd Gen 10gb(also for 15 and 20) ProClip holder, it felt loose. It you wait just a bit I am sure they will have one specifically for the 4th Gen.

Loose sounds cool. Might work with a skin covering the ipod.

Hi,
Our vent mounts have a larger cradle than the radio shack ones. They accomodate any size iPod or iPod mini even with cases. Also, our vent mount cradles have a new feature, they swivel. So they can be turned back and forth to face driver and passengers.

Its not loose, I would say it fits perfact. I have a 4G 20Gig and it slides in very nice.
Southpaw: A case won't work its not that loose.
Won't ProClip ship it to you? Have you tried to contact them?

Finally took a few pictures of my setup. It's not really clean right now as I haven't made an attempt to hide the wire for the cassette adapter. I really like having it on that side of the steering wheel, it's VERY easy to manipulate in that position.

the only thing that I'm confused about that setup, too artificial, is - what do you do when you need to use heat or a/c? do you just have that one vent shut off? I guess that would be the case. Hmmm - I wonder if that would work in my car.

Animalchin, that's the only problem, routing the wires and doing some management on them. But the location is pretty sweet otherwise.

Mashada, you are correct. The vents closest to the doors in my car can be shut with a circular adjuster. I still get heat/AC out of all the others. That's one of the reasons I chose that location as well. I am not too concerned with the cool AC blowing on the back of the iPod in the summer, but I am not sure how warm it would get in the winter with the heat on.

I'm considering this one (http://store.yahoo.com/lovemacs/01452scb.html)
that one above seems to be what i'd prefer, but not the suction mount, it'll be screwed in. I need to be flexible, to get it in the right place in or around my center console.

yea my dad has a wrx wagon, and you can totally close it so i dont think the ac/heat is a problem.

proclip's parent company is Brodit (out of Sweden).
http://www.brodit.com/?l=1
The proclip mount is a little loose for the 4g models, however that's a perk. I stuck some velcro (soft side - not the hook side) on the mount to pad the back and protect the chrome. ipod fits really well, not too tight.
Look on the left mount (this angle is from the top):

So just to clarify before I order, the 3G 40GB proclip will still hold a 4G 40GB but the fit won't quite be snug. A bit of soft velcro can help to make a more secure fit.
Thanks,
Trent

Belkin's TuneDok worked great in my (2000 Town & Country) minivan's add-on console's cupholder. This gives me an easy reach to my iPOD & my eye's stay on the road when searching for music to play while driving (most of the time). My other vechicle's cup holder (1995 Doge Caravan) is too close to the dash for the TuneDok. For this vehicle, I will have to customize the "junk holder" tray atop the dash to accept my iPOD, audio & DC cables. Pics of both installs will be posted in the near future.

It noticeably doesn't fit as well as the 3G.

Two soft pieces of velcro do the trick and better protect the back of the ipod...
