I am relatively experienced with my digital music collection however, I recently purchased the new ipod and have become more concerned with my collection. I have been using RealOne basic to rip my CD's to MP3's and it has worked fine for me (and still does), although I am interested in examining and using other programs which rip CD's to MP3's. I have not ventured away from RealOne basic and do not know anything about other ripping programs. If anyone has any advice/comments and/or links to websites that have information or programs for download I would appreciate your opinion.
Thanks

Hey dannym,

You could try Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) . It uses LAME technology to better encode the music. Plus it supports VBR (variable Bit-Rate) encoding. It's also free to use!

Hope this helps,

I am also looking for a good ripper. Is there such a ripper that automatically tags the song info? That would be wondeful:>

Hey talkingipods,

Yeah the above mentioned program will automatically tag your mp3 upon encoding. Another program I use quite frequently is Easy CD-DA Extractor (http://www.dawnload.net/audio_software/cd-da_extractors/easy_cdda_extractor.cfm) . The link provides a download location.

Easy CD-DA Extractor will also automatically tag your mp3's. Before you start encoding, you will need to download the song/album information from freedb's database (free of charge).

I also use a program called ID3 Tag-It (http://www.id3-tagit.de/english/index.htm) . This program provides mass tagging capabilities. Very handy if you wish to put in comments on multiple mp3's.

Another great program that i use is dbPoweramp. It's free, uses LAME and can automatically tag your tracks using freedb. :D

EAC, looks up cd info on FreeDb.

DbPowerAmp uses lame 3.90.3 which is crapola.

I can't get my EAC to connect to FreeDB. It returns a "server error" message. I'm thinking this may be because I am behind a firewall and on a network? Any ideas anybody?
I'm also finding that EAC takes about 5 hours to make one cd track into mp3. Is this right??

Thanks.

EAC, if properly configured should take 20 minutes on a relatively clean CD. This is using Secure Mode with Accurate Stream checked. This program using LAME 3.90.2 and the --alt-preset standard parameter will produce great sounding mp3s.

Make sure you have updated the FreeDB server list, and entered an email. Firewall may disable this function.
