I have a convertible I drive on the weekends. I bought a pocket PC (Dell Axim) last year with navigation software so I knew where I was going - I have navigation in my other vehicle.
I stored my music on an SD card, but of course, the ipod has enough storage capacity to hold my collection. My 256MB SD card, when maps were loaded, could hold about 45 minutes of music.
I liked where I had my pocket PC, easy finger reach, doesn't interfere with the passenger, and wanted the ipod to be visible to me and where I could touch it quickly as well.
I already had an Arkon CM088 mount. I bought a proclipusa.com mount for the ipod and the Axim. As a note, the 3G 40GB cradle is a little big for the 4G model, so I added a little padding to the back of the sides of the cradle to protect the chrome on the ipod. This worked out better than I thought it would and no scratches to the ipod so far.
I went to the model store, purchased the thickest sheets of plastic they had. I scored the plastic to the size I needed (5 inches long), drilled holes for the mounts, spray painted it black to match the mounts and put a dull coat on it to protect the plastic from the heat.
I then used a cable tie system that came with a Dell LCD I bought to keep the wires hidden down the pedestal and then connected everything to my stereo system AUX input and to power. I used the Belkin car kit because the line out does not require another cable going up the pedestal.
