Been checking out the forums and it seems to me like a few of you are boarderline obsessive about an object if not all the way over that line. The ipod is just a toy, it does not define who you are. You is simply a hard drive in a fancy case. The things you own end up owning you. I own an ipod, but I don't go around acting like it's my god who I have to worship. While you people threat and ##### and moan about scratches on your ipods mine is sat in my bag/pocket with *SHOCK HORROR* no case. Apple don't give a damn, they just take your money. They have marketed the ipod as something YOU MUST own, and charge over the top, outlandish prices. Over-hyped if you ask me.
Looks like they got you hook, line an sinker.
I got given mine, but I couldn't care less whever it dies or not. It's a cool toy admittedly, but damn it is just an mp3 player. Don't let products own you.
There's people in some countires that would kill for a 99c burger.

Take a step back. Peeps in here are just having fun. There's no iPod worship going on here.
Although I do agree with you on some level... ridding yourself of material things is extremely liberating. And "fiddling" with my iPod can certainly eat up more hours than I was originally willing to allot to the process.
Hmmm... hold on...
Whoops! I've got to go! My iPod is calling me.
"Yes! I'll be right there, little iPoddy! Sorry! I know how much you like to watch Judge Judy. Here's the remote."

To piggyback on .com's point, any item that I have paid an enormous amount of money on (clothes, shoes, iams dog food, whatever) gets a lot more attention than the cheap items. That's the way it goes.
$400 for an iPod...or $50 for a portable cd player (which gets more care?)
OR
$3000 for braces...or $2.50 for a toothbrush (which gets more attention????)
Just my 2.48 American cents (which I don't waste either) :-P

^.^ Good point there...
Think of an iPod like... a new Corvette. It's a top notch vehicle. One of the best you could find.
...
Now YOU try not blabbing obsessively about it. :-P
We're not obsessed, per se, we just love what we have and ogle what we don't have.

If you don't care why even go on the Internet and check out an iPod website? Did your iPod make you visit ipodlounge?
Even if you didn't pay for the iPod, someone did. So whoever gave you the iPod was had "hook, line an sinker" I assume your friend?
Are the prices really over the top? They seem to be not far off from the competition for similar products (MP3 players with storage for thousands of songs)
Is it marketed as something you must own? I guess I missed those ads. What I have seen are people listening to music, sometime just silhouettes of people listening and dancing to music. I didn't get the impression that it was necessary to get one, just a cool way to listen to music.
My iPod doesn't own me. ^_^ It's something I paid for, so I should be able to obsess and enjoy it all I want. =D

Nate,
I hope some of the other comments puts the general emotional level of this site in place. We are just a bunch of people who have a "hobby", which happens to be an iPod or two (or in SolidGun's case 10). If you went through the forums with that kind of outlook, things might not look so bad.
I'm sure there are sites for pritty much every kind of hobby imaginable, and if you visit those sites you'll meet people who are just as "in to" their thing as we are here with our iPods and music.
I'm sure there is something you are just as in to as we are with iPods here, so before you judge, look at how you are with your "Cabbage Patch Dolls" or "Stamp Collection" before throwing swings here.

I don't think they are overpriced at all. At least, not compared to other MP3 players. It's arguable that they are ALL overpriced. I say this after an experience just last week. My nephew from Texas was in town and he expressed interest in getting an iPod. I showed him mine and he played with it a bit. His mother asked some questions about it too trying to determine if it was a worthwhile investment. A couple days later I took him to Best Buy with us and we checked out the MP3 players. He wasn't certain which MP3 player he should ask for (he'll probably get one for Christmas). We were looking them all over and they had several Rio's, iRiver's and others. I told him I've heard a lot of good things about both the iRiver and Rio players. They have good sound, good interfaces and good battery life. But, I think these players are actually more overrpiced than an iPod. Here is what we found:
iRiver: 128MB Flash - $130
iRiver: 256MB Flash - $180
iRiver: 20GB Harddrive - $330
Rio: 256MB Flash - $150
Rio: 1.5GB Harddrive - $190
So, he was asking me how many songs would fit on a 256MB player. I told him something like 50 or 60 MP3's. He then asked how many I have on my 20GB iPod and I told him over 4000 - my entire CD collection. I also compared it to an iPod mini with it's 4GB drive. He was like, "So, for another $70 I could get an iPod mini and have it hold 1000 songs? That seems like a much better deal." I have to agree with him.
SolidGun

No they are not overpriced or priced too high to be owned. If people can afford to buy it, its fine....if not they just won't buy one.
If I didn't have two full time jobs and a part time job during breaks from school and 2 part time jobs during the school year, I couldn't afford to buy 90% things that I want (thank goodness the things I want are almost always under $10,000). If you can't afford it, get a job....if you can't afford it then, get a second job. There are people and places out there that would kill for 99c burgers....well, I don't live there, and I work hard for the things I want.

Here is an article that I wrote for #########, this will explain where the 10 iPods and counting comes from. It is rather long, but bare with me if you want to know why I have/had so many iPods.
Nine iPods ago I was a college student, and 9 iPods later, I am still a college student. I clearly remember the first time I got my iPod. It was the toughest decision I had to make that week. It was also a week before the final exam week and I was determined to study and tried to get my concentration up by living at the library, but became bored and somehow ended up at Amazon.com entering my credit card number for 10GB iPod.
Since then I have owned 9 iPods. Currently I live with 3G 20GB iPod and Silver Mini. I also have the iRiver iHP-120, but that???s a different story. So you may wonder why I have had 9 iPods? It isn???t that I am so rich nor am I a collector of iPods with the goal of owning every iPod ever made. Some may expect having used 9 iPods to be a blessing, but it was more of a curse with me.
First two, I ended up selling to friends that wanted it on the spot without facing the danger of online ordering. Third iPod, I dropped it at a party which came in contact with the paved driveway 20ft down while talking to a girl that I have been trying to talk to since beginning of that school year. I was keeping a smile on my face, mustering all my willpower to keep my composure and cool, but totally frantic on the inside thinking how fast I am going through iPods and wondering if I will continue to depart with them. The girl felt awful about what had happened and wanted to know what that was that lay in pieces. She was so genuinely concerned that I took her to Amazon.com, showed her what the item would appear as a whole, and told her that it isn???t a big deal explaining how easy it is to order another one, completing the order within minutes. She was amazed at the simplicity of online ordering and how the world is becoming a better place. I was even more amazed a week later to find out that she was engaged to her high school sweetheart, about the time my order arrived via UPS. This was the M8737LL/A, July 2002 version, #4 iPod.
Of course, I sold that one on eBay later when I needed some money for the much awaited Xbox. At that time, I wasn???t listening to too many music because I wasn???t buying new albums and the school had officially made their stand on downloading music. I thought that I would no longer use my iPod, and I am a sucker for newer technology.
Four iPods would have been the end of it, but guess what I received on Christmas from my parents. Apparently, local BestBuy had them for sale and my dad knows how crazy about technology I am and purchases the 5GB and informs me on Christmas morning that Santa thought that I had been a good boy. I didn???t know Santa shopped at BestBuy too.
After two weeks of use, I find the 5GB size to be extremely annoying and shell out $200+change for the ultimate iPod at the time???.20GB (#6). It was my friend for 6 whole months. No problems, no accidents, nothing. So why isn???t in my possession now? Greed got in my way with the introduction of "third-generation" iPod. I sold it on eBay in April waited 2 months and picked up the 15GB iPod (#7).
The story should end there and but good times never seem to last for me. Someone decided to kidnap my iPod with some cash and two laptops, shortly after the school year began. My roommate had forgotten to lock the room. He lost a laptop and some money, I lost some money, old laptop and ???the precious???. We both got the insurance money, but they only gave my old laptop???s estimated value, which wasn???t much. I needed a computer more than an iPod, so I put all the money I got on a desktop.
Christmas came around. It was 2003. I was hoping Santa would bring another iPod. He didn???t. My parents bought me some peripherals for my new computer. Guess what I got from my relatives? iTunes gift certificates. They had seen my iPod when they were visiting earlier that year and thought it would go well with my iPod.
That Christmas gifts motivated me. Normally I don???t get a job during Christmas break, but I wanted an iPod, now that I have tunes to play. I got a night shift job at Target, stocking. Before I left to go back to school, I picked up the 20GB "third-generation" iPod. It broke two weeks later. I exchanged it with an open box item to save $20. Figured there wouldn???t be much difference. That one was broken too. No one had bothered to check it before placing the return item on the shelf. Went back to the store, got a new one, and added a 4 year service plan, just in case.
The 20GB I have now is the 8th iPod under my possession if I don???t count the two returns. I was going to keep it no matter what happened. I dressed it up with a case, hid it in my pocket, locked it up in my desk drawer when I was out. I still have it and use it.
In June, I saw an iPod Mini (Silver) at a local store. I have been checking them out on eBay and they sell above retail price. There was a lady considering buying both of them, knowing how rare they were. Luckily I had $310 left on my credit card. Brought it home thinking $profit$, went out, came back to find that it was opened by my fianc??e. She thought I got it for her. I couldn???t say otherwise. 9th iPod, and she doesn???t even use them, complaining it is too difficult to manage it.

Nice friend.
Advertising is getting more clever every year, go figure.
Advertising makes the iPod look like a fun device to have. I don't think anyone actually thinks it is a nessessary object they MUST own. Unless you think it's subliminal. Then just put your Aluminum Foil Hat back on and chill out. People have been listening to music for a long time, people have been using portable music devices for decades. MP3 players are just the next step. People don't HAVE to have any of them, but many like the iPod. For now until the next "big thing"
The replies to this thread have proved you wrong. You'll just need to learn to live with it. Sorry.

Ok think about this in your post you wrote that you had your iPod given to you whereas most of the other people here bought it with their own hard earned money and when you shell out $400 for something like that you want to take care of it like it is a god. The iPod is no different then a ferrari you don't shell out a million bucks so you can go off roading with it you want to keep it in the condition that you bought it in. When I got a scratch on my iPod I was devistated but then i realized it was just an object and got over it sure some people go overboard but I don't think anyone worships their iPod(do they?) I think people just look after it really really carefully and try to keep it in the condition they got it in.

What 'Pod means to me? I just got mine, but I do enjoy being able to take it with me on the go. Pretty much everything about it is great, which is why I like it so much! It looks great, feels great, sounds great, there is no reason to be over obsessive about it, but purposely getting it scratched is just plain careless and inconsiderate if you ask me. If it was a gift from somebody you care about (Or maybe is it the new fad to just not care about anything?) then you would know that everytime you get a scratch on that thing, or everytime you leave it in the charger wasting battery, your wasting THEIR money. So maybe THINK next time before you come here complaining about us worshipping our IPods, and instead think about how you're being disrespectful. Then think about how we are just cherishing something that helps us/makes us feel better, etc etc.

My friend stole it if you must know...
What kind of idiot are you, one that accepts stolen property which is illegal and punishable with jail time.
The people on this forum at least work and earn an honest dollar to be able to afford the products they use and don't go out stealing them nor accepting stolen goods. Since you don't seem to understand that when the rest of us who work purchase a product, it's more valuable to us because we had to work hard for what we have. So we take care of our possessions.
If we had of all stolen our iPods, like you and your type of friends, then our iPods would not be of any value to us either and we would not take care of them since it didn't cost us nothing.
Maybe, if you and your kind stop stealing from people, then they won't have to kill for a 99 cent burger. They can just sell the possessions they own and buy that burger.
So before you try and make like honest, decent, hard working people on these forums are obessessed with what they worked for, you need to check yourself first. Your the thief here, not us.
