i have a mini and a dock but to use the lineout feature of the dock do you have to purchase an extra cable from your local audio store to do this? reply a.s.a.p

Yes, if you mean to play the iPod through a stereo. I got the Monster iCable for my dock. Very good sound. Well worth the money I paid.

or you could get a 5 dollar cable from radio shack that would do the job fine and save you a ton of money.

No, its not special. But I do agree with minime that the $20 monster cable is the best choice. I believe it is a 1/4" jack to RCA cable cord. You'd be surprised how cable quality helps sound. But either way, it'll sound superior to using the headphone out.

The sound is definitely better with the dock's line out than with the headphone jack. I did a test and with the iCable plugged into the headphone jack, the sound is VERY soft (I had to turn my stereo almost as loud as it'll go to get a good volume) and very muffled. Though the dock is expensive, remember it works as a charger as well as a line out port.
