I was just wondering, how many of you guys have NOTHING on your iPod? I was especially wondering about how many people kept their iPod naked (meaning no case). For those who don't have anything, why do you keep it in such way? Don't the scratches matter? Just wondering.

I have never used a case. It's a Digital Music Player not a fashion accessory. Mine is scratched up sure, but do I really care. Nope not really. I wouldn't mind a few scratches back, but hey they're battle scars  For the 4G however maybe I will get a case, maybe not. The Wasabi Glow skin looks nice, but it woudl cover the normal white iPod that I like.

I just use the apple case. I like it the best, and when I take it out to use it, I still get the naked iPod feeling. I can't bring myself to put a "permanent" case on the iPod, cause it's so nice to use it without anything on it. Mine's got a few small scratches. They don't bother me.

When I first got my 3G iPod, I wanted to protect it so I tried a couple cases. I first used the one that comes with it but found that it would occassionally work its way off my belt. I then bought an iSkin Evo. I got the arctic one because I wanted to keep the iPod white look as much as possible. I used that for a while and the belt clip seemed to work much better than the one on the Apple case. However, there were a couple drawbacks. I wanted to use the dock but I couldn't with the skin on. Also, when I'd go to show it to my friends, I was always sad because they weren't getting the true "iPod experience". The iPod just isn't as cool with any sort of case on it. I also enjoy using it myself without a case much better. So, I then ordered some iCondoms off eBay. These are basically PDA screen protector sheets that are cut to fit your iPod. They are very thin pieces of plastic that hold onto your iPod through high static cling so there is no residue when you remove them. They come with one piece that covers the LCD screen and one piece that covers the back. I must say, I love these things! Unless you tell them, most people won't even know they are there (unless they closely examine the iPod). So, they protect the screen and back from getting scratched up while still providing the naked iPod look and feel. The back protector also keeps the back from getting all smudged up from fingerprints which we all know happens instantly with a naked iPod.

Xavier, I don't understand what your point is. We like our iPods for what they are. Besides being an MP3 player, they are a work of art. Much like most of Apple's other products.

IMO, if you truly care what your iPod looks like, you want enjoy the looks everyday as you use it and not hide it in some case.

It's kind of like a car. Sure, you can buy a Chevy Metro or a Porsche 911. They both get you from point A to point B. But, some people will buy the Porsche because they think it looks cool and performs better. You wouldn't then go and cover it in some kind of case while you drive it around so that it won't get scratched. You drive it around, showing it off in all its glory. You just tend to be more careful with a Porsche compared to a Metro. I use the iCondom's much like I use wax on my car. It helps protect the finish and keeps the fingerprints off but it no way detracts from the natural beauty.

I leave my iPod out of the case for everything except when I throw it in my backpack and bring it on campus with me. Does it have scratches? Sure, it's got a few....for the most part though, I'm careful with it, and the case I use (Speck Flipstand) is there to make sure it doesn't get crushed by books during the day. If it makes a difference, I do stick a pda protector on the lcd screen, just because I'd rather not be staring at gashes when I'm trying to read the menus.

Hey!

I don't keep my iPod in any sort of case. I have had both of the 40GB iPods, and for me they are big enough. I don't want to put it in a case and have it be really bulky. The only thing I have on it is a JavoScreen protector. I really only care about protecting the screen. I keep my iPod in my pants pocket, so I don't worry about scratches. :-)

My iPod only has a case on it when out of the house. The reason I use the case while away from home is cause I throw it in my purse, in my pocket, stuff like that. When I get home I admire its beauty.

I used the icondom on my 3g and will on my 4g. it covers the screen and the back but it is not noticeable so its almost naked its more like see through clothing.

Do the iCondoms really work that well? Like do they stick well enough? I was considering getting them but thought the static cling idea was a bunch of hooey. I'd love to keep my iPod "naked" but I'm afraid of scratches.

Yeah, they stay on fine. I've never had it even start to come off.

Shadow was right on. I like my iPod, but it's just a music player. I think it looks cool, and I hope it lasts as long as possible, with few scratches or problems. It is out of a case a lot though, and it has a few scratches, and I don't care. It's made to be portable, enjoyed, and used, and that's what I intend to do with it.

It's not some otherworldly being, that needs to be handled with sterile gloves, and always kept in a vacuum sealed case. Some of the people here wrap there iPods in SARAN WRAP. Holy crap. They go and buy a beautiful device, and they make it ghetto as hell by wrapping plastic all around it. Why? So it doesn't get fingerprints on it? It's made of plastic and metal. It's not going to melt or anything...

I try to protect mine, and be careful with it, but will not cross the line into obsessing.

If I get my iPod engraved, I will have an excuse to less careful with it because I know I wouldn't be able to resell it. Then i might actually work up enough courage to do the brushed iPod thing.

I was also thinking about doing the brushed iPod thing too. Anyone here actually do it?

I actually do have a case mainly because I hate the color (I might buy a 3g 40gb and have it painted or just wait for a 5g depends on what happens money wise next month. :) ) I got a black vaja flip case to prevent the eventual dirt build up. The color white seems to have this way of attracting dirt to it so I decided to pre-empt that. Also I wanted to clip it to my belt.

Are there people out there who literally do this?!?!

I don't really see a case for my ipod as all that outlandish. When I used my $20 CD player, I kept it in a case, and it wasn't all that great looking to begin with. As far as I'm concerned, the case is primarily to keep pocket lint out of the connectors and to prevent major cosmetic damage [like if I accidentally run into a door or something] at the end of the day, I take care of it the way I do any other electronic device I have, and that means keeping it in a case to protect it from whatever I might throw at it.

I dont mind scratches on the mirror part all that much, since it still feels smooth in my hand no matter what...and how often are you looking at the back of it?

The only thing i mind are scratches on the LCD. I can't find a good solution to this though, since every screen cover i have tried leaves those ugly bubbles or wet-lookins spots.

If i could find a real good way to simply protect the LCD, i really wouldn't mind going caseless, and would just keep the iPod in my pocket.

Does anyone have experience with a real good lcd protector?

i have a few different cases (one latexy, one contour hard case, a leather case that i hate, and a hot pick Exo Skin)--from when i first bought it and went all iPod carazay in the early months. now i occasionally switch up, but for the most part i keep it in one of those latex cases with opening in the top (PLO i think).

when i'm moving around or on the go i keep it in the case. but when i'm just at home i'll keep it in my hand--i like the way it feels on my fingers. i keep the screen protected always with PDA screen protectors. i'm mostly concerned with dropping it though, hence the cases when i'm out.

ah, cases wouldn't help if you ran into a door. alas, my month old LG camera phone got its screen completely destroyed by causually walking into a table by accident. IT HAD A CASE ON.

Anyway, I'm looking for a case that is only abouti $20. Not paying $30 or $40. I need this for my G4 20 GB.

I will like to have a case so that when I'm on a bus travelling around to football games and competition that it will stay protected.

Maybe a case that has a sturdy clip?

Any cheap cases like that?
