In-ear phones are great for portable use, bass, and have great isolation from outside sound. Apple makes some as well as Sony [ex-71 is a popular model], Shure and Etymotic. The Apple and Sony models are the closest to your price.

I would suggest for Bass the Sony MDR-EX51LPs ($40) or the MDR-EX71SLs ($50), both handle bass very well and overall are pretty damn good for sound. The best part is they are a great pair for a great price and you won't be disappointed. The links below describe them:
Sony MDR-EX51LP (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=GEH65TlXCDf6iHhdoYHw7nZbYZsPdop0wAM=?Pro ductSKU=MDREX51LP&Dept=acc_Headphones&CategoryName=acc_Headphones_Fontopia%2e%2fEarbud)
Sony MDR-EX71SL (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=GEH65TlXCDf6iHhdoYHw7nZbYZsPdop0wAM=?Pro ductSKU=MDREX71SL&Dept=acc_Headphones&CategoryName=acc_Headphones_Fontopia%2e%2fEarbud)
Get back to me when you get the earphones, whichever they are tell and me how they are:)

i wouldnt suggest the sony ex51's or any sony earbuds, the ones that doug suggested are only good for bass and thats it, the mids and highs are bad and the over sound sucks. im a basshead to and im waiting for the etymotic 6i to come out, as there goin to be specifically made for the iPod, and are supposed to have more bass then there previous models and shures.

Have you tried these earphones and listened to much music with them? Or have you just got this information from other Loungers? I find them great and have no problem with them. Going from stock to these it was a worlds of difference.

I would agree with you but the original post said $30. I mentioned the higher priced models but figured it best to highlight the sony's since they are closest to that price.
I think that any in-ear phones are an upgrade over buds and worth the money. You can always spend more but that's up to buyer.

They are selling under 30 bucks with free shipping. Those headphones are underprice, what a great deal!! :) I owned CL30 before, and they fit my ears very comfortably. The low and high frequency ranges are great, and isolation is fine. For pice under $30, you can't demand too much for high sound quality. But you get what you pay for.

If $30 is your budget and, as you said, you don't mind over the ear, then go with a Koss model. The KSC-50 and 55 are around $20 and will give you the best sound in that price range. Both use the same drivers, but the 50 is a clip-on and the 55 has a neckband.

I know you are looking for something $50 or less. But if you don't mind spending an extra $21, you can get the Shures. They are quite a step up from the Sony ex71s.
My EX70 has no bass, unless the EX71 is significantly different, which I doubt it is, I don't think you'll be happy with. I recommend getting the Shure E5c, you can get them for slightly over $300 now if you look.
