1. Make sure you are the only one signed on in XP. If anyone else has accounts on your computer, restart and just log on yours.
2. Wait untill XP is up and running and all your start up junk (firewall, antivirus, dsl, etc) is done loading.
3. plug in your ipod and itunes should start right up

4. if this doesnt work, try running the ipod reinstaller

You shouldn't have your ipod plugged in til after your PC has loaded up. As far as it not being recognized. Mine takes awhile. I click on itunes and then plug my ipod in and it does take some time before it's recognized.

Not sure why yours doesn't show up at all.

Some PC bios can boot a PC from a USB drive (just like booting up from a 3.5 disk or CD ROM). Your PC maybe trying to boot to your ipod if you have it connected through USB when you turn it on.

I had a similar problem recently.

I suggest reinstalling the iPod device driver and if necessary running the iPod Update program.

If the problem persists, try reinstalling Windows XP ('Repair' option). Then reinstall Service Pack 1 (or 2) if you had it installed previously.

It worked for me.
