I haven't seen this discussed anywhere except in the review off the main page: The new 4g iPods can charge off of a USB 2.0 connection.

This is pretty big news IMHO. I had received a 3g one week before the 4g came out (it's going back) and had purchased the goofy dual-headed cable with USB and FireWire connectors. To use the iPod with USB you have to connect the FireWire to the AC adapter and the USB end to your PC.

Anyone have any experience with the new 4g and USB? Does it work well? Will it work in strictly disk mode with just the USB cable?

I also have a question:

Does the ipod charge while the computer is in standby?

The 4G USB should work as the 1,2,and 3Gs worked with Firewire. This means that the USB port gives off power to the iPod, charging it while the iPod syncs. It should work just as the 3G did with the USB plugged into the PC and the Firewire lead plugged into the AC Adapter, just without the extra wires.

Yes, I think it will charge while it's on standby, though I am not 100% sure.

Hope that helps,
