Just got a new 40 gig iPod ... works fine but when I was uploading my music files I noticed that about 20 gigs of the storage space was already taken.

I set the iPod to work as a removable drive and when I opened it I found about 40 files and 15 folders with names made of "gibberish"/symbols, in addition to folders that obviously should be there, Calendars, Contacts, Notes, and iPod_Control.

When I try to delete these files, I get an error message "Error Deleting File or Folder: Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

iTunes shows that my iPod has 34.74 GB used and only 2.41 free, though I've only transferred 14.98 GB of music files.

Any thoughts how I can get rid of those junk files?

Welcome to iPodlounge!

I'd suggest running a "Restore" process via the CD that came with your iPod. This should wipe the iPod hard drive clean, removing those bogus music files.

I used iPod updater to "reformat" the iPod and that fixed the problem. Thanks!

These 4G iPods aren't giving a very good first impression. Some of them have dents supposedly, stuff on them, dirty even though they're brand new, and now even gibberish files....

Something strange going on?

My 4G 20GB had a scratch on the center wheel...
New, out of box.

I love it eitherways.
