Has anyone attempted this? Are there any firmware issues? Fit issues? etc.
Does it give the 3G a 12 hour battery life?

You could POSSIBLY fit the new ipod battery but there are some things to consider.
you will probably not get the same amount of batterylife due to the fact that the new ipod uses new chipsets and the HARDware used probably does a better job of power management
firmware probably might be able to increase the batterylife a little bit but probably not even enough to the new 4th gen ipod's standards
people whining over the fact that they think the new firmware that the 4th gen ipod uses will help their 3rd gen ipod are clearly not seeing that the new ipods have different chips than the 3rd gen.
one of the main things i've noticed differently between the 3rd and 4th gen ipod is after every track that loads on the 4th gen ipod, I dont hear the hard drive being accesed anymore like on the 3rd gen ipod.

Actually, I read somewhere that the new 4G battery does not have any more capacity than the 3G battery. The battery life improvement was possible simply through more efficient hardware/firmware. I agree with TrunksGoku, the new firmware might help a little, but I'm betting most of the efficiency is from the new hardware, not the new firmware.

You are better off with aftermerket batteries that have higher storage than the stock iPod battery (search the forums) I will most likely make the switch, but not untill my warantee is up will I crack open my pod.

Apple did say they didn't use a "heavier" battery. In other words, it could still be the same power, although very likely that it's not the same because it's bigger, and supplies more power, but is just the same weight...
