Hullo everyone:
I've got:
brand new 4g 20 gig
p4 1.2ghz
winXP Pro
generic firewire card
So, the ipod was all set up/formatted ... but .. when i try to transfer songs from itunes it stops after about the second or third song, and when I look on the ipod, its only really transfered about one. The way around this is to transfer one song at a time, but who wants to do that?
The second problem, which is probably related ... every time after transfering and after I "safely eject the ipod" with itunes, the "do not disconnect" msg will not leave, and the pod won't return to its menu until I "reset" it.
I find this very disconcerting, i can't transfer one song at a time, and then reset the machine every time i want music...
Anyone have any ideas?

Every time I get this @@#$ working, something new crops up. I'm having this exact same problem myself. I hope you/we can get an answer!

Alright, here's what I did to get it working again. Note, however, that I connect via USB2.0, not FireWire. (Considering all the trouble people seem to have with the FireWire connections, you might consider getting a USB2.0 card--mine cost me a whopping $7.99 on-line.)
This method will not delete your music files or make changes to your library.
Restore your iPod (using the method outlined in the manual, where you plug it in, flip the "Hold" switch, and hold down the "Menu" and "Select" buttons for 6 seconds or so).
DO NOT CONNECT IT YET!
Open your Windows "Control Panel" and go to "Add/Remove Programs." Select iTunes and click "Chage/Remove." When the installer opens, select repair. It will cycle through and replace some of the program files.
Restart your computer.
Once it has restarted, connect your iPod. iTunes should launch and you should be good to go!
I hope this works for you.

Well ... my solution seemed to be only temporary, as the problem came back! I tried my solution *several* times, and it wouldn't solve the problem again. So I tried connecting via my FireWire and it *seems* to be working fine (for now). You might try this patch here and see if it helps:

This is a known issue / incompatibility with 4g iPods and Firewire cards using the VIA chipset. Apple is aware of the problem and is working to supply a fix to its customers. The current workaround is to use USB 2.0 port for now.

Microsoft's firewire update (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9e8df3f3-cd0c-4edb-936a-5f0043e88bb2&DisplayLang=en) apparently gets around this issue by increasing the timeout, allowing everything more time before crashing out. What it does not do is fix the *problem* that's causing this; it doesn't necessarily bring the speed up to the high levels we should be experiencing with Firewire.
