I use an iPod with windows 2000 (have no choice, the only PC I have). You don't have to have firewire to use an iPod with windows pc..... I use USB on mine.
You do need to have the USB cable for your iPod (which until the 4th gen was not a standard accessory included)...... and you need to be running windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 installed or Windows XP.
As per Apple..... iPod for Windows requires a PC with built-in FireWire or USB 2.0 port or a Windows-certified FireWire or USB 2.0 card and Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) or Windows XP Home or Professional.

Now, how would you use a 2nd Gen iPod, that never had usb support on a computer without usb? You can't even connect the usb cable to the 2nd Gen iPod, since the 2nd Gen has a standard firewire connector on the top of it.
You will need to get a firewire card, but they are cheap, and won't cost much more than than USB cable.
